Expected weight of 5 frame Nuc when buying bees

Whilst there are guidelines for what a nuc should contain, I’ve never seen mention of any weight! Whilst there are guidelines they are only that. What was the set up of this nuc frames of bias/stores? Did your president put an entrance block/reducer in? I asked earlier what the inspections or...

Expected weight of 5 frame Nuc when buying bees

You weighed the nuc after it had been robbed out? When the nucs arrived and you say you noticed the weight difference did you visually check available stores. You could have fed then IF it was required. How many days after you transferred the nucs did you inspect again? We can assume there was...

Expected weight of 5 frame Nuc when buying bees

Not sure I’ve ever heard of anyone weighing a nuc on arrival before….. 5 frame nucs should have as a minimum 3 frames with bias…and obviously enough stores reasonably covering the remaining frames. Personally I’d prefer extra brood and a lighter nuc if I am the customer, a couple of £ will buy...

    Oxalic Acid

If you want to bother doing that fine, it’ll do no harm. But the crystals remain active or in the hive for some time and foragers will return…. So simply pay your money take the choice. I suspect most don’t bother.

Apiary with 240v overhead power line

Seriously don’t worry about it I had some not quite under those bloody great pylons and they thrived! Forget the conspiracy theories and nut jobs just get on with it!!!!!!

    Cut comb half filled

Wet combs are not preferred by wax moth, so some store wet.

    Pollen in supers

    I very much doubt it…….

    Chalk brood?

    Change the queen……

    Chalk brood?

Difficult from photo….as soon as I enlarge it’s to blurry. But think on some I can see eyes? Possibly just a drone clear out due to bad weather and end of season although that does look a little extreme. I’d double check for stores to be on the safe side. If it’s chalk then that volume should...

    Attempted Hive Thefts

The tag I post will notify you as soon as hive is moved from safe area…… it already exists, you would be aware seconds after the hive has left the apiary and it’s up dated constantly with Sat photos.

    Hives stolen, Llangollen area

Their air tag is not as good as the 1 I posted, not the same features and no safe areas.

    Off to the Heather

Yes if it does improve next week as forecast it could be good. May even drop another few down if it looks like the spell of better weather will last! Although that was looking doubtful.

    Off to the Heather

Don’t know as I’ve not been back but given the weather very doubtful….. it was torrential rain the other afternoon when I was meant to be grafting😂

bucket of soft set, what to do

Just warm it until it gets to a point you think you can bottle… if you over do it keep in a cool place and stir over the next few days till you get to a point your happy then bottle. It will readily re set, when stirring try not to fold air in!

    Hives stolen, Llangollen area

Few of the thefts I’ve seen are big full colonies at peak season and multiple boxes. I’m sure these colonies would have been condensed with an empty box or 2 on. The majority of thefts I’ve seen are spring time and simply walk up probably rachet strapped with foam bunged in the entrance. You...

    Hives stolen, Llangollen area

Unfortunately a very average and cheap set of bolt cutters will go through about 90% of most chains and padlocks. Any going about this sort of thing are likely to have something if for no other reason than to deal with the farm gate! My wife recently got 1 of these for the dog and it’s...

    Queen staying beneath hive

Obviously on your next inspection check she’s there/eggs but I’d leave them to it for a week. There may possibly have been another issue.
