Solar heated hives to reduce varroa

Probably cost…. At least double the cost of wooden National hives and they are not without a few niggles and drawbacks.

Solar heated hives to reduce varroa

People need to remember that all the above requires planting in humid valleys for true efficiency.

The Brynmair slant on the Dartington Underfloor entrance

It’s a good easily constructed floor for about the same money or cheaper as the main suppliers economy floors. What’s the lost reason?

    Gasvap alternative

I found the gasvap a pain on anything more than a couple of hives. Even with extra caps they are hard to handle and that’s even with some snazzy Webber bbq mitts. And yes when hot I don’t think it sublimates correctly. Then there’s the problems with the blow torches. The original ones they...

    Hi from East Hampshire

Hi Jo moving hives always involves a bit of lifting, if nothing else ask at your local group. How did you get them there in the first place.

    Gasvap alternative

Hi Jeff looks similar to the Instantvap and price wise, we have a Uk suppler for them that should make parts or issues simpler. I picked 1 up early this year and it’s excellent. Do you have any battery power tools that will ease the pain of the purchase as you can order the instantvap to fit...

    Asian Hornets...

That’s not really true for considerable parts of southern England and the southern coast, likely to be the areas most at risk or affected!

    Autumn Varroa treatment

As Dani says brood breaks won’t get rid of mites but it can reduce numbers. There’s obviously a natural die off, bees will remove some. Some will leave the hive and long periods without brood affect female mite fertility I believe. I did come across some you tube presentation showing this but...

A few weeks to wait for this to yield nectar i think.

I find with ivy there are many different varieties and the flowering period is large also depending on its position. Some in my area will start early Sept and you need to get the Heather off before it starts. There’s often some still going into December if frosts have not been to harsh.

    Autumn Varroa treatment

Hi Jim I’d suggest if other members are treating then you’d need to. As for not treating some don’t but management or even lack of can keep numbers low to a point. Late flows like heather and treatment after will reduce options and negates Thymol type treatment. Unless colonies are...

    Oxalic crystals

All the beekeeping suppliers sell them if you’re just after smaller quantities. There’s obviously a mark up but it’s relatively in expensive.

    Oxalic Acid

They simply followed up on research already done and it was nothing new!

    Autumn Varroa treatment

Trust me if I can do it others should manage just fine. Treat in the Autumn…. Any threshold of mites will reduce the colony’s chance of winter survival. There’s a wide range of products! Winter treat to provide a belt and braces approach allowing for late brood rearing or drifting mites. Also...

    Oxalic Acid

Yes but the powers that be didn’t think to add it to the poisons list did they😂

    Autumn Varroa treatment

It was never meant to be a single Winter treatment for the year though and I never heard any sensible person describe or use it as such. I always considered it belt and braces and giving the colony a clean as possible start to the upcoming season.

Expected weight of 5 frame Nuc when buying bees

Rather agree and they had been with the new owner a number of weeks, I did ask if they had been inspected in this period.

    Autumn Varroa treatment

OA will kill mites on the bees used 3 times every five days you are covering a sealed brood cycle and should achieve decent results.
