What did you do in the Apiary today?

I read somewhere that it’s something to do with the air pressure and their rigid exoskeleton. I can get horrible headaches when the air pressure drops.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I've had a few new queens that started life small but quickly filled out about a week after mating.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Taking the last of the supers off tomorrow morning and then starting extraction as OH is out all day. Borrowed a 9 frame electric extractor so hoping I can zip through the process as was slightly dreading tackling 20 supers with a 4 frame manual. Hoping to get an electric one in the sales later...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went out this morning to start clearing the supers in the out apiaries and had a little helper which was happily sunbathing while I sorted through the frames.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Sedums and asters in flower. Ivy has buds on but not quite in flower yet.

    Lack of wasps

Wasps in the out apiary. One weaker hive (recently requeened) had quite a few in the supers - I managed to despatch about 20, they were so dozy. Narrowed the entrance on the hive and gave them a frame of emerging brood to boost their defences from a very full nuc.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

No it looks suspiciously light to be honest. They swarmed at least once this year - last spotted disappearing over the hedge at the end of July so I think they've massively depleted their numbers. I managed to get about 4 frames worth of brood/stores into empty frames with elastic bands and all...

    Clearing Bees from Supers

One quick question if I may - how far away is ‘away from the hive’ please?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I’ve had queens successfully mate in the past from QCs in late August. Several of my hives still have plenty of drones and drone brood in them plus the weather looks favourable here for several weeks so I’m very hopeful.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked the out apiary yesterday and now have all hives with mated queens and they're all laying well. Interesting to compare two hives with BMH queens I bought late spring - one was a Ligustica and the other a Buckfast. The Ligustica hive has been a real pain - very swarmy, a bit temperamental...

Any opinions on honey jar filling

I'm selling the Old Castle Farm Hives one if interested although postage might be a bit prohibitive.... Haven't actually used it as it was an impulse purchase and it's a bit big for what I actually need. Still in it's original box.

    Paynes, closing?!

A great shame, had some good stuff from them in the past but Roger & Becky are carrying on breeding queens & nucs which is great news as I've only ever had brilliant bees from them. Also bought a shedload of kit in the sale including half price Apideas.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Nothing today as it's absolutely pouring but returning from walking the dog (& getting soaked in the process), I noticed that there was a small clump of bees looking wet and miserable on the outside of a mating nuc above the entrance. I can only assume that they have run out of space so found a...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Took 10 supers off the 3 home hives, the bees were not too impressed. Left them all with a super each in case the weather turns but they’re all producing nice arcs of stores around the brood nest and one had put a load of pollen in the super as well. One new queen is laying like a train (10...
