What did you do in the Apiary today?

£17 a box for 25 delivered by pallet. But so much depends on who you get to speak to or who picks up your email. I was lucky this time ('I love the bees' she said) and she marked the price on my account for future purchases.

    Oxalic Acid

Oddly enough, a frind reminded me of that clip a few days ago. I think I'm getting the message...

    Dispersal phase?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I think it was ahead of the ivy which hadn't really started to flower. Your advice noted though.

    Oxalic Acid

    Yup, done that now.

    Oxalic Acid

Do you have to declare what you intend to use the substance for? Would your application be rejected if you stated 'varroa treatment for honey bees'?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Fed syrup as required in both apiaries over the last two days. I was very surprised to find that empty supers which I'd placed on hives after harvesting three weeks ago are completely full in one apiary; ie one super per hive. So glad that I didn't start feeding when I removed the summer honey...

    Dadant or Thorne Empire

I'll be there all day on Friday, and Thursday afternoon and evening (Central Association evening: Robert Pickard in conversation with Richard Rickitt). Hope we can have another little (or bigger) meet up. The last two years has been Friday lunch I think.

    Dadant or Thorne Empire

I'm convinced. I'll get one at the National Honey Show.

    Dadant or Thorne Empire

I don't doubt that the Dadant is a good buy and possibly the best smoker - even though I don't own one. But I don't understand how some users claim that it stays lit longer. I think most smokers available have basically the same design. Today, I discovered how my smoker can stay lit all day...

    Rejected eggs

I looked at this colony (with the queen whose eggs are removed by the workers) today. There's plenty honey and pollen - and a couple of frames well laid up with eggs. No larvae, and I don't expect after all this time that's there ever will be. It looks like I got it wrong and took this queen...

    Rejected eggs

I didn't think of that. Sometimes there's far too much. I'll check soon.

    Rejected eggs

Neither - she's one I raised in a mini nuc. I usually leave them in the mini nucs till they have been laying for a while but (who knows?) perhaps I removed this one after I saw eggs.

    Rejected eggs

A colony with a new laying queen is rejecting her eggs. This has been going on for a few weeks now. There are always some eggs visible and never any larvae. Do the workers eject (or eat) them because they are not fertilised? I've not seen this before but I guess I'll have to remove the queen and...

    Delay introduction of bought queen?

The advice is sometimes to keep her in a cool place. Compared to? It doesn't say.

    full length leather gauntlets ?

I'm glad if I manage a full day without a sting.

    Clearing Bees from Supers

I came across a recipe to make up your own BeeQuick. It includes only a small amount of benzaldehyde, and seeing how the bees can't move fast enough to get away from regular BeeQuick, I shudder at the thought of using benzaldehyde neat on a towel over the super.

    Strainer/bucket design

Yes, chain screens work well, and it's easy to remove the unit at the end of the season. The other insect protection we use is plastic mesh. It is fitted with Velcro at the edges and has a magnetic divider/opener down the middle. Both options have issues if you're carrying a tray of food to eat...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That's good to hear. Hope you make a good recovery - and are still able to do the things that matter to you.
