    Labels

They may work because they are complementary colours. On the other hand, it might be that leaves are mostly green and flowers are mostly other colours, and that's where our inspiration comes from. Decades ago, when I used to watch gardening programmes, I used to get mightily fed up with being...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspired by a famous book - The Checklist, Atul Gawande - I've been trying to keep a checklist of what I learn (and preferably retain) about beekeeping. It has become quite unwieldy, and all about the writing, never the reading back. So I was more than delighted yesterday to find this in a...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Definitely lids on straight away. If you use wide (85 or 90mm) labels, there's room at the sides for text such as granulation, ways to enjoy honey etc. You just have to find a way to apply the labels straight!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I don't know much about this but if these large populations (most of these colonies are still packed with bees) include winter bees, might it be that their extended youth means that they retain the attributes and roles of young bees?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

At my other apiary today. As expected, most of the colonies have only some sealed brood so I'll be doing the 'Christmas' vape at the end of this month. I think I keep on the safe side with feeding - not more than four or five L/ kg of syrup/fondant at a time. Even so, two hives had filled their...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Windy warm day in SE England and the air was full of bees flying out across the hives in the direction of the wind and seeming to have no trouble getting back against the wind. Because some colonies still had nine frames of brood just a few weeks ago, I took the chance to have a peek in some...

    Varroa treatment

Hmmm. David Evans has consistently said that his colonies have a brood break in November and therefore that's when he does his winter treatment. I had a peek in all 25 colonies in one apiary today and none have eggs or larvae. Those that have sealed brood will be broodless soon so I'll vape at...

    Sending Honey to EU

I'm just back from a little cruise. The captain was Dutch and described himself as a 'modern man'. He then said 'Hello everyone. I've been told I'm not allowed to say ladies and gentleman any more.' We groaned and laughed, but just a little. 🤭

    Varroa treatment

For me it wouldn't be worth the risk that the miticide might have reduced efficacy.

    Syrup “honey”

I read an article from some time back by an American bee farmer making the case that the 'honey' his bees made from the high fructose corn syrup he fed them should be considered 'real' because he was merely providing a substitute for nectar. The bees processed it just the same and made real...

    Eu Queen import via Ireland

I think he's saying that this particular company doesn't sell directly to addresses outside the EU and is asking if we know if a third party legally importing them. I don't think he's asking for anyone's opinion on imported queens.
