What did you do in the Apiary today?

I have hives right in the middle of a 25 acre non-commercial orchard and can drive right up to them. The dog walkers on the right of way are at the edge and people seem to be unaware of my hives, even after years of daily walks. If your option is like that, it would be great.

    Raw honey

If lots of people were to tell you that they didn't find the taste of your honey pleasant, you could say, each to his/her own. But it would be unwise to take the ostrich approach if you depended on sales.

    What am I missing?

Did you get as far as form filling? You can't place an order, just request a quotation. I'm curious to see what the delivery charge is - and if they'll sell to non EU. But no, it's not obvious tho me why it's so cheap.

    Syrup “honey”

I remember Marin Anastasov talking about feeding sugar. He said invert is 72.7% sugar and fondant has highest ratio of sugar to water (90%) – except for dry sugar. So If the bees aim for 15-20% water, I guess they have to reduce invert by about 10% and increase the water in fondant by about the...

I don't know but I've used stuff I've stored for two years and it was fine.

    Syrup “honey”

Fake honey has been bulked out with syrup and it tastes like syrup mostly. Syrup that has been 'through' the bees tastes more like real honey - which is why we need to be careful and remove frames of feed from brood boxes in spring before the bees start to move it up into honey supers. That's...

    Syrup “honey”

No knicker twisting going on. When half the entrants at Apimondia a few years ago had their entries rejected, I'm sure they were more surprised than anyone. I think the explanation can only have been that syrup feed had got into honey, probably by being moved up from brood boxes. The numbers of...

    Syrup “honey”

I imagine this is so but I'd like to know for sure. I read somewhere that bees take fondant down to store it and you can see the white clumps of it in the cells. I'm pretty sure that's wrong and that the writer was actually seeing was crystalised ivy honey. I'm under the impression that they...

    Call from a tree surgeon

Thanks for all the comments. As it's an option to leave the log with nest somewhere till spring (upright if possible), I've decided to go back to the guy and suggest doing that as it might be the end of things to ask the colony to establish itself in a new home at this time of year.

    Call from a tree surgeon

I can't quite picture that. Presumably you did a split along the log on both sides if you were to be able to open it.

    Cheaper fondant

Sugar has gone down in price and maybe some wholesalers need to shift some of their stock. 12.5k blocks from BFP @£13.25 till the end of this week. It keeps. https://www.bfp-xpress.co.uk/products/bfp-fondant-icing-12-5kg

    Call from a tree surgeon

I'd be glad to hear any comments on how to respond to a tree surgeon who has just called me for advice on what to do with a hb nest in a tree cavity. The tree has been felled and the log containing the nest is exposed at the bottom. Shining a light in, he thinks that the nest is about 2m high...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's very difficult to be a legend until you've achieved that most effective of all publicity stunts - dying. So-called living legends tend to be reclusive to the extent that they might as well have departed this mortal coil. I feel that the boringly alive among us get a raw deal. In music, for...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

There is a charity bookshop here with a vast collection of books. The only indications of prices are notices dotted about the shop that say Paperbacks £1.50 Hardbacks £2.50. The price tells you nothing at all about the book.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's possible I have an exaggerated sense of his achievement because I'd been trying (and failing) to write for myself the very book I found. But I still think he's great. Who are your favourite writers on books about beekeeping in general?
