    I’m on my way!

On one occasion when I mentioned swarming, having read that swarming is a natural behaviour that will almost invariably happen at some point, I got shouted at and asked if I was winding everyone up 😏 You’ve got to laugh 😂

    I’m on my way!

Glad it’s not just me. As I said in a previous post I’m impossible to offend but being looked down on for being ignorant is another thing entirely and I can’t abide pomposity. Any recommendations for friendlier places to ask questions?

    I’m on my way!

I don’t think I’ve ever suggested getting bees and chucking them in a box. How patronising. I seem to remember making it very clear I’m keen to get/do it right. In your dog training analogy, what has happened on here is the equivalent of someone posting on a dog forum “I’m looking to get a...

    I’m on my way!

I have no doubt that beekeeping will be for me. However I’m almost sure that by and large, beekeepers are not for me. What an unfriendly bunch.

    I’m on my way!

Yes. As I’ve said - numerous times - I’m a complete beginner. However I’m doing my best to learn as much as possible. I am indeed doing lots of reading and have my name down for the next local beekeeping course. Anyway thank you all for the input and useful posts.

    I’m on my way!

Yes I did. To both questions! I’ve also got a nice lady near-ishly nearby who is very kind and is aways happy to answer questions. I’ve usually got my nose in either Bees At the bottom of the garden or another slightly drier book that I can’t remember the name of. YouTube videos are useful...

    I’m on my way!

Hello everyone! I posted a while ago about wanting to start keeping bees. I was roundly scolded for not taking it seriously enough but assured everyone that although I may have an irreverent conversation/posting style I take the welfare of any living thing I’m responsible for extremely...

    Hello

Just received “Bees At The Bottom Of The Garden”, am off sick from work <feeble cough> so am going to snuggle with the dog and spend the day reading 😄

    Hello

Hi! I actually live in Colchester but the flower farm and my Dog Training Barn are on the same plot in Hadleigh! Thanks for the info that’s much appreciated!

    Hello

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the advice. To be honest it sounds very much like Dog Training. Not in the sense that I can train bees (although the mention of Varroa does conjure up a tantalising image of having to rid them of mites with tiny little brushes) but in a “put 3 dog trainers...

    Hello

    Again, I’m a complete beginner.

    Hello

Oh I’m almost possible to offend! I will probably ask lots more stupid questions. Feel free to ignore me. But I assure you when it comes to live creatures I take things very seriously. I wouldn’t ever go into this sort of thing half prepared.

    Hello

NO. No need to shout at me thanks very much. I intend to go to bee school. I’ve just been watching stuff and may well have got the wrong idea from the bits and bobs I’ve gleaned. That’s why I’m asking questions. I thought that’s what the beginners section was for 🤨

    Hello

… oh and what are these Flow hive things? Any good?
  16. FidoDido

    Hello

So as I understand it - you buy a hive and a colony. At some point, the colony gets too big and they toodle off to pastures new with a queen and the existing hive gradually builds up again. So you catch the swarm and put them in a new hive so now you’ve got two hives. Or else you don’t, and the...

    Hello

Thank you very much everyone! I am devouring every word of advice! I’m fairly relaxed about bees/wasps/creepy crawlies in general so unless they seem to take against me on sight I expect I’ll be ok with a bit of practise. My friend has various flowers and is planning a lavender field shortly...

  19. FidoDido

    Hello

Thank you! I have just ordered the book.

    Hello

Well thank you very much for The replies! I’m quite excited to get going! Is there a particular time of year that’s best to start my colony? Do I need a bee suit or can I be like the Texas Bee Works lady who seems to have some sort of invisible force field around her whereby she never gets...
