    Beesting as autoimmune trigger?

    Beesting as autoimmune trigger?

Sympathy, I hope the flare up settles soon. I was appointed consultant gastroenterologist in 1974 and kept bees throughout my 27 years in post but cannot answer your question - I can't remember any patient reporting a flare up of IBD after a sting. Step forward an immunologist....

    Lack of wasps

Still very few wasps here just 3-4 miles from you. Your honey room activities must be sucking them in.

    Apivar and OA vaping

I am swayed by a recent observation from the ex-chairman (a small-scale bee farmer) of my local association: Dear Member I've just received this observation from Kevin: The issue with thymol treatments is that they have lower effectiveness generally. Also the strips if propolised don’t work at...

    Apivar and OA vaping

This is what I do after gleaning info from the forum over the years: For the last few years in late summer I have treated with Amitraz, which has a low risk of inducing mite resistance. This year, by way of a change, I am going to vape OA x3 at five day intervals - to cover the mite brood cycle...

    Clearing Bees from Supers

I'm sure there is that risk but Dani is the best person to answer that question.

    Clearing Bees from Supers

5-10 minutes. Difficult to say how much because it was all too easy to pour too much on to the cloth so I now put the cloth over the mouth of the bottle and invert. I really need a dispenser of smaller volumes. If I put the cloths back into my beemobile the residual smell lasts several days but...

    Clearing Bees from Supers

Yes, this is the first season that I've used similar: benzaldehyde - much cheaper than Bee Quick and also very rapid. https://apcpure.com/product/benzaldehyde-99-5-acs-letterbox-friendly/ Also for the first time I've used Dani's 'away from the hive' method with success. The stimulus for my...

    Bee sheds or Similar

Sympathy++ - and I have no room to place a large shed. Beekeeping for me is just a wonderful hobby but extracting in a smallish kitchen is a PITA for both of us. I have no problem selling honey so would happily pay someone £15 per super to extract the crop into buckets.

Queen cell appears in queenless colony amidst scattered worker-laid drone brood.

One of my colonies has been Q-less for a 2-3 weeks. All the worker brood has emerged and I've been slow to get round to amalgamating it. Unsurprisingly today there is scattered worker-laid drone brood. What did surprise me was the appearance of a sealed queen cell! I've not seen this before. I...

Mrs Nasty finally dispatched. Now what?

Which supplier was that - do let on?!! For several years I have been buying buckies from https://www.bhpqueens.co.uk/ and always found them calm and good producers.

    Super above or below?

All my supers and BBs are stored in stacks outdoors (no shed at the apiary). Usually dry rather than wet to reduce the risk of robbing. In autumn I place a dish of 80% acetic acid on top of each stack under a hive roof = no trouble with wax moth over winter.

Could there be a link between cbpv and sprays ?

I see that it is a French paper translated by 'a professional translator and native English speaker'. Very poor English style IMHO.

Very low varroa counts: prophylactic treatment or not?

I renewed the sticky paper and vaped 3g of oxalic acid yesterday and read the boards today. Home apiary: total varroa drops on three hives:13, 20, 7. Out-apiary, two hives: 5, 3. Grateful for your thoughts.

Very low varroa counts: prophylactic treatment or not?

Thanks, I've placed an order. Strange that APCPure, my previous supplier, now requires a Home Office licence whereas HDChemicals don't.

Very low varroa counts: prophylactic treatment or not?

Thanks to all for your replies. I'll report back after doing a forced drop/?sugar roll (never done one before)

Very low varroa counts: prophylactic treatment or not?

Only occasionally do I count varroa using sticky paper on a varroa board (OK, I realise the method has its faults) but did so last w/e in preparation for possible late season treatment. For the last few years I've treated blindly with Amitraz late August and a single OA vape early December. My...

    Getting old

When I had a procedure under general anaesthetic two years ago I was graded "Clinical frailty scale: 3"! 3/5 or 3/10? - I wasn't told. God knows what it is now. Ah well, I'll keep on lifting the supers and recuperating with a customary glass of wine.....

    Getting old

As a retired medic: caution is needed with both those age-old 'non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents'. They can cause stomach inflammation/ulcers and hence bleeding. They are contraindicated if you have high blood pressure, fluid retention and/or dodgy kidney function - ailments that are...
