Hive Monitoring - Surprising winter data

Nah, they quickly find the warmest* spot in their cavity to build their nest. *Warmest = most insulated

What’s the difference between a chick pea and a broad bean? I’ve never had a broad bean on my face

Just for some fun.... an excuse to smile.

David Attenborough while walking in a park came across a really sorry looking duck, covered in slimy mud and mess, so he carefully picked it up and wiped it nice and clean with paper hankies before popping it back in the lake where it happily paddled off. A little strole further on and he finds...

    Why have they done this?

Yup, basically the wire acts as a heat sink and the queen (or the bees who prepare cells for the queento lay in) notice this.

Feeding Ambrosia Syrup Jan / Feb

I always followed the perceived wisdom of not feeding syrup through the winter months until I ended up looking after bees for a lady who fell poorly in the spring. This lady hadn't read the perceived wisdom and had sporadically fed a 2:1 syrup in a four pint feeder on a few occasions from...

Going rate of Nucs and colonies this spring

Obvs anybody vat registered would be a fool not to claim vat back on the boxes. Selling bees is zero rated

An exchange with ChatGPT this morning

No, but as there's a legal requirement to keep records of hive treatments and generic oxalic acid isnt really allowed under our rules, hence it's much easier to declare oneself treatment free than poke your head above the parapet, skewing any statistics gathered on the subject beyond plausibility.

    Drone rearing for queen breeding

Sub optimal drones are exactly that, it's why I've always eschewed pushing colonies to produce any more drones than they're already inclined to.

How many splits can you make from just 2 colonies in one season?

When thinking about splits I like to leave the original queen on six national frames of brood well covered in bees, they can then bounce back quick. Rob them to four or five frames and they often loose all momentum and it takes a couple of brood cycles(thats a goodly chunk of the season) to get...

    Randy Oliver OA sponges

Strips hung on frames by the side of the brood nest come into direct contact with far more bees than a sponge over the frames, especially if the strips are made of a friable material such as cardboard which the bees set about chewing and removing. A much much more logical delivery approach...
