Chalk brood or something fouler 🫤

Hmm not sure what to do now. I guess wait on the hive mind.

Chalk brood or something fouler 🫤

Phew. So do I blame the BMH queen or give her a chance yet. It’s actually the first time I’ve bought a queen in (other then my staring package).

What about this sort of thing?

Chalk brood or something fouler 🫤

If you recall I came into the season beeless having lost my 2 colonies though the winter. (I’d suspected they starved I was aware I struggled to get them to feed in the autumn (it’s always hard to syrup feed in a tbh and they looked isolated from the candy I also gave 🙁)). It was a largish swarm...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Ah, are they in the cavity not the chimney.

Bumble bee supplementing its nectar diet

Astonished there are different wax months for different bees - suppose I shouldn’t be.

hive ventilation - sauna or chimney?

Correlation is not causation. A stable thermal environment could represent a higher thermal mass caused by increased stores. So maybe the hives survive because they have more stores (as revealed by the stable temperature) rather than the stable temperature itself being advantageous.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

What happens to the gubbins - wax etc left behind? Does it matter? Just curious.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Could be the answer. Are you sure it’s supercedure?

    My first cutout call-out

    Not yours then.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

    Why if there are eggs?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

In my humble opinion, thinking in 3D, with all that nectar around they look to be at the edge of the brood nest even if in the middle of that frame so I’d say swarm.

Why would the bees kill their larvae?

What happened in the end Bex - did they ever recover enough so you could do a wash (or do a sugar roll which doesn’t kill them necessarily).

    May be slightly obsessed *twitch*

I guess I suppose I was alluding to Garry-R’s just made points. Presumably not having much option to be able to expand and shrink an entrance they plump for a compromise.

    May be slightly obsessed *twitch*

Yes, Seeley showed entrance size was one of the things they assess.

    May be slightly obsessed *twitch*

But I think that was in cavity selection for swarm scouts. That might not be optimal in other circumstances.

    At the entrance

I think the advice is generally to fill the gap under the entrance as they are underlying and then can’t find there way in.

    Also not new just back

I know but my dad made one of them so I feel bad.

    I’ve got BEEEEEES!!

    Yes that was it.

    I’ve got BEEEEEES!!

I think I read they have a different dance for indicating sources close by. Can’t remember the details though.
