    Another Beekeeping show

Following on from my post 10. I have now had a couple of calls from attendees at the BFA board meeting and can clarify that this is *NOT* a reincarnation of the old idea of several years ago, and that it is also NOT a BFA function. That it was mooted...even in the planning...WAS mentioned but...

    Another Beekeeping show

I was not at the board meeting Patrick due to having been exposed to Covid a few days before, so not party to any discussions that took place...no doubt will hear in due course. However this is not a new story. The BFA have been talking about this ever since the original Stoneleigh show moved...

    Beetradex update

With bulk clean wax currently trading at £10 to £14 Kg that is a figure of £250 or north of that for the foundation, but exchange wise it is not far different from Thornes old 2 for 1 offer...2ld wax for 1lb foundation. The foundation works out at about £22 per kg dependent on...

    Beetradex update

The list of trade attendees has been available online for quite some time. I know a few who chose not to go because it was so thin on stands of interest. I understand there are several reasons but to be fair to Patrick...the list was easily viewable..and if you own the show why let others use it...

    Vat on nucs

I see. A non VAT registered business in the middle of a supply chain can indeed be a problem...everything goes up 20% in one step as tax you pay out just becomes a non refundable part of your costs, and raises your price to the customer....whereas if all are VAT registered your entire business...

    Vat on nucs

Look into it....you can claim back a considerable period prior to registration too once you register. However, have to demonstrate it as being a business.....not too onerous as it can even be a sideline...does not have to be your main economic activity.

    Vat on nucs

You can register voluntarily at lower levels..and in most cases it makes little sense for a beekeeper NOT to. You can claim back the VAT on all your inputs inc fuel and a reasonable proportion of home costs as you need an office. All honey and bee sales are zero rated..so with 20% back on many...

    Vat on nucs

NO VAT only applies if there is something special and expensive about packaging. Frame and combs are an integral part of a nucleus, and correx is simply basic packaging. Might be different if you sold in a hand carved and gold inlaid mahogany box however....

    Murray McGregor at Medway BKA

Did a Zoom talk for Halifax last night.......as a Zoom speaker you dont really know how it went but getting blush inducing feedback......seems it was fine. It was being recorded but does not belong to me so do not know if people members of other groups can view it.

    Ouch!

I just turn it all into more hives and equipment Goran. Had a fair bit of correspondence with a beekeeper in Zimbabwe....his stories are unreal. Barrowloads of note...each in millions or trillions, and if you did not get it turned into a commodity within an hour it was worthless in a day or two.

    Ouch!

Yep...you should see the new prices for bee boxes in Europe too.....up between 40 and 60% on a year ago. My customers are going to be hurting. Honey price static...and possibly even under some downward pressure. Viability issues ahead for some I fear.

    Flow Hives

Flow hives and OSR. What could POSSIBLY go wrong? However my negativity and lack of willingness to look after a few for a local farmshop what wanted them cost me my siting on their land. They gave it to someone else who WAS happy to run their flow hives. At last meeting they told me they had...

    Cold storing honey frames

Read the headline and thought that it was referring to another practice altogether...honey is frequently cold stored, but at serious sub zero temperatures. It stops crystallisation dead and kills all stages of wax moth. It is the way comb honey is kept perfect over a long period, even several...

Do most people use mouse guards or not?

We never use them. Quite redundant if you use 3/8" entrances as they just cannot get in. Traditional UK floor have entrances that are far deeper than needed and mice just waltz in without guards.

What is this wax formation on old brood frame (pic attached)

Finman is spot on...as he often is. Its a mouldy old piece of decrepit comb that has been next to the side wall and attached to it, probably for support as it looks a bit shonky in itself.. The cell walls are a bit swollen indicating it has also drawn damp and the cost of recovery of a few...

    What is happening in Sweden?

Dont think ferals play a big part in it...though it will be some. It is more the local bee type that most beekeepers have. Drones from these stocks seem to dominate matings.

LOL...and all this while also writing a narrative for Rowse. The stimulation is making my narrative more colourful...which is a good thing. For me at least...was feeling a bit stale earlier tonight. 8 hrs of frame waxing on a Sunday does not exactly get the grey matter going.

Ok, thanks. Just what part of that do you find contentious? And, What would it take to make you change your mind? post 189 and 190. More of the same. Answer a question with a question..... Stop, playing intellectual games with us and answer the question. If you cannot and are making a...

Going off to have some supper after working late...be back soon. In the words of Bette Davis in a very old film....'its going to be a bumpy night'. One of my old associates on Bee-L had a tagline when dealing with such issues. 'Never mud wrestle with a pig. You cant win, and besides, the pig...
