pre-made Hoffman Brood Frames with Wax.

No actual minimum....but with it being carriage extra and plus VAT small orders struggle to be worth the beekeepers while. Hope we get some resellers in place around the country before too long.

Like these? A customer order going out....with or without wax fitted.

    AFB Vaccine

Its rare here too Michael. The prevalence is exaggerated in peoples minds due to there invariably being some kind of press release when there is a finding, at least thats the case in Scotland. In our own outfit we have had 7 cases of AFB since 1950....which will be closing in on 150000 hive...

Fake Manooky in the spotlight again

You might not.......but there are plenty out there still sitting on all their 2022 honey and most of their 2021 honey. Some of them big names too. Was talking to a leading stockholder on Friday and he has still been buying in and has hundreds of tonnes of UK honey in stock and is only just...

Fake Manooky in the spotlight again

Honey producers in this context does NOT mean beekeepers. It is deliberately phrased that way to allow you to THINK that. In reality exporting to Saudi Arabia and other middle east countries has been possible for a long time..I used to send to Saudi Arabia and Dubai. Its awkward but no more...

Bee watch - is the upstairs downstairs entrance the key to making the step towards treatment free beekeeping

I had the 'good fortune' to have a stand right next to the guy at the Beekeeping Show. Even before it opened he went into us about not having underfloor entrances on our hives. I told him he was talking nonsense and he got irritated. He then started banging on about our bees all being poisoned...

Fake Manooky in the spotlight again

According to all the info I have had from friends in the trade the levels actually go UP in storage, at least early in its life. They could (previously at least) sit on stock in the shed and its value rose. All change now though..........its value has crashed and now without a high MGO rating it...

Fake Manooky in the spotlight again

Gee...if you read that and take it as gospel then you are swallowing a marketing campaign. You ned to realise that industry (NZ Beekeeping/packing) is in the deepest of deep trouble. For a long time they have been trying to keep all packing of NZ Manuka inside the country. To say ALL brands...

    Cut Comb frame.

Its actually approx 37mm....1 7/16. A little wider than the standard frames you get in the trade these days. Its the OLD standard spacing and we prefer it...so its 11 to the box rather than 12 with the slimmer frames of today. We long ago dispensed with the < on the sidebars......just going for...

    Dunblane and Dumfries 7/8 March

Just getting ready for these two association meetings tonight in Dunblane and tomorrow in Dumfries. I am there introducing and supporting Jolanta and Kasia who are giving their first major talks on their work in the Jolanta project and the plans for the future. Any readers here wanting to go...

    Cut Comb frame.

Oh I don't have any issues with that......just it does not greatly square with my experience....(the bit that making them draw from scratch is more stressful than giving them foundation...that's the only bit I am puzzled about) However....I doubt the stress effect is great...especially given...

    Cut Comb frame.

We keep a large tall jug filled up with hot water and use heavy large carving knives kept hot. Hot enough to melt down through the comb enough to give clean edges. There are several of them in the water...use for one comb only, scrape off on the edge of the off cuts bucket then return to the hot...

    Cut Comb frame.

Not sure what PolyHive will say to that, being a very experienced guy in Scottish conditions too, but I find that conclusion puzzling. As I said earlier, I appreciate and accept there are many motivations and thoughts on these matters, but providing them with a template, especially with excess...

    Cut Comb frame.

I will have to ask permission from their owner. They are supplied to us by the main cut comb customer. Very similar to the New Zealand cut comb boxes often seen at retail but smaller sized to take 200g instead of 340g that the square NZ ones take. I don't think selling them will be a problem...

    Cut Comb frame.

I have posted many times about the economics of various production methods over the years based on some research we did while I was young and stupid back in the 1980's when I had the (foolish as it turned out after the experiments) dream we could do well with heather sections. There is a...

"The more woody the plant, the darker the honey"

You could well have a point there. In very dry conditions, especially in our Aberdeenshire sites, the bell heather yields a far paler honey than the text books say, and in extreme cases is merely straw coloured. When the rain comes it reverts to the classic colour almost overnight, as if the...

"The more woody the plant, the darker the honey"

Spanish heather types in general have a different flavour and colour to that from the UK, and even within the UK there are variations. The minority honey types in them gives a different colour, often darker and reddish rather than the more orange here. However, the most common dark honey we...

    Beekeeping Show 25th

Small alert to people who may have purchased foundation from our stand on Saturday! All those I spoke to about it, and also mentioned in our literature available alongside it, we make it clear that the sheets are cut to the size required for the frames we supply...sizes not available at the...
