Bee farmer / Commercial queen rearing

A few interesting points.... Firstly...in general...unless the person has no axe to grind...like Michael Palmer.....only believe your own figures. Everyone counts differently and some are downright mendacious...similar to the tall tales on honey averages. Jolanta actually harvested a little in...

2nd Feb Webinar - Murray McGregor

I will defer to him except by PM on this one. We do not normally keep secrets regarding the bees and what we do......this has resulted in me getting into trouble in the past lol, but quite happy to accept any questions on any relevant topic....unless its the one that has the answer 'I eat too...

2nd Feb Webinar - Murray McGregor

That's at season end...ALL clinical cases are removed and destroyed at, or very close to, time of diagnosis. Even suspect colonies are taken out and culled as we do not want to wait for lab results and then have to do a long round trip after any positives are confirmed..so diagnosed AND...

2nd Feb Webinar - Murray McGregor

Whilst the process is not actually a secret and can easily be demonstrated to others who visit, and the principle is simple, she DID learn it from a guy who I presume is the originator and is in fact a member on here and could...should he wish...describe it first hand rather than have it related...

2nd Feb Webinar - Murray McGregor

There were indeed a lot of questions of all shades....but thats no problem. Folk also got a couple of brief sights of Jolanta too...who some are surprised is a real person and not just a branding.

2nd Feb Webinar - Murray McGregor

Wow..the jungl;e drums are in action I see. This one will be a little bit different...will only give a short intro speech about who we are and what we do for those who don't know me already...then its just as the itle suggests...ask me anything relevant. People might never ask the thing they...

    Bees chucking out brood?

Just spotted this thread. A lot of round the houses stuff but not much attention paid to Finman's first post. 99% certain you have a drone layer and that is the root cause of your issues. I think the technical term is 'gubbed' (probably). Even attempting to save it is less effective than just...

    Cambridgeshire BKA talk by ITLD

Must tell Jolanta she has a stalker.....lol. She has a second one too, 'Jolanta's Queens'

    Cleaning and Sterilizing Brood Frames

Apologies for the rather long post....have a new computer just set up and experimenting with it...hence so many pics..not been able to post my mobile phone pics here until now.....but means I can show as well as tell. Only reacted to a post that came up...did not notice it was in the beginners...

    Cleaning and Sterilizing Brood Frames

5% for this as well but it can be approximate. It cleans frames very effectively at half that. We have a 300 litre tank (was our honey mixing tank until the late 90's)...filled about 80% full...so about 240kg of water. Add in half of a 25kg sack of sodium carbonate. Have two very big gas burners...

    Cleaning and Sterilizing Brood Frames

Used both Washing and caustic sodas in a blend up until a couple of years ago. Now use washing soda only. A boil in that is SO much quicker and more effective at cleaning frames than hand scraping, taking off all wax and propolis. The absence of caustic means we are not sterilising against afb...

    Housel Positioning of frames

Yes....I remember your input in various places...we come from the same camp I think....interested in everything but are invested with enough experience to (usually!) spot a lemon when one is advanced towards you. This was always a lemon as it just made zero sense. To be fair...having no direct...

Different types of foundation and different cell types

Must have been horrendous stuff for that to happen or perhaps something had happened to contaminate it prior to reaching the bees. Have seen bees make combs on chicken wire as foundationless...so they are not especially fussy what base they get to work from...so if you dont mind some very odd...

Seen that picture before...it is beautiful stuff. Some of the very best.

    Housel Positioning of frames

Long time ago now I was a moderator on Bee-L when this stuff all kicked off and went crazy. Loads of sycophants crawling out of the woodwork to support Dee Lusby in her 'mission' to bring us all to small cell...which was very much for her own agenda (no need to go into that here...….) The...

Different types of foundation and different cell types

People are a lot fussier than the bees are. As long as it is good quality residue minimal wax and not too soft (some cheaper wax can be and sags) the bees will be very happy. Being British or EU origin does not guarantee anything other than provenance for those to whom it matters (you pay your...

Laurence Edwards' petition to allow the use of the word "Raw" to describe unheated, non-pressure filtered honey.

I don't miss the point at all. The use of 'raw' is raising straw men arguments about other peoples honey. By the use of a legally meaningless term. I do not know of ONE beekeeper who sells cooked honey pressure filtered thus denaturing it. So it is trying to gain advantage (that's fine in...

Laurence Edwards' petition to allow the use of the word "Raw" to describe unheated, non-pressure filtered honey.

I think people are not picking up on Patrick's very serious point. A;; except some very bottom of the spectrum honeys are NOT cooked...therefore they are raw. Adding a meaningless term to labels IS.....whatever anyone else seems to think....sowing......quite intentionally and with total...

Laurence Edwards' petition to allow the use of the word "Raw" to describe unheated, non-pressure filtered honey.

Despite my connections there I do NOT support this. It is frequently used as a negative marketing tool against others who do NOT make the claim...and it is largely meaningless. It is indeed a powerful marketing word *to some*....but do ANY of us sell cooked honey? The implication is that those...

    AMM imports?

Only if you compare the price from resellers. A Buckfast queen direct from an Italian breeder is well cheaper than Cypriot xxxxx. Not sure how the Italians will take it if I give their basic prices out but it is a lot cheaper than yours...but then you are not really comparing like with like...
