    Over-wintering Nucs

I keep in my garden with main hives: just other side 25 meters away. Rarely lose any .None last winter. Can rarely get single nucs to survive without feeding - last year after June it rained - a lot - every colony had to be fed (Had taken two honey crops by end June) Most were down to their...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

After last week's highs of 15C (!). 11C today , cloudy, watery looking sun. No wind. Ideal for trying to find Qs in my five nucs - I could not find any last week when I added foundation and doubled brood boxes. Found 2 Qs marked Red from last year, could not find 2 but queen laying and found...

    When to move hives

Option 2 is safer. Align the hive in the car so the frames run front to rear and not sideways. Rock from cornering is therefore reduced. Strap the hive down so it cannot move inside the car. Ensure a full complement of frames so no internal frame movement is possible. Deliver to new location ...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Added a brood box to a poly nuc. Bees did NOT like it - they decided I was an interloper and chased me round the garden. Normally very well tempered but it was very windy. I had a veil and overalls on: but trainers only so an invasion up my trouser legs ensued. Just as well I am (now) immune to...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

You are giving them space too late. They get cramped and decide to swarm some 2-3 weeks before they actually do. If using Nationals - then 9 frames of bees with 2 spare is time to super..If you wait any longer they decide they are cramped.. You of course could also have swarmy bees as well..Or...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Converted 2 x Commercial polynucs ex Maisemore to National via table sawing in two to reduce height and adding width to end walls with 25mm Celotex. Labour of love - but then they were barely used and free. (a must for a skinflint)

    Off Lay?

Normal. Saw one this am. Light syrup in contact feeder 250ml maximum will often jog them to feed Q and her to restart laying.

Is Nosema more of a problem this year?

Association apiary had nosema this year. I have used Hivemaker's recipe every year in Autumn and since then never seen a case of nosema in my own bees. I also add it to any Spring stimulative feeding.
