Combining Hives using Newspaper. Lots of fighting and dead bees

They will go in. Once you've shaken them out on a mild day remove from the apiary that hive or nuc box. Before you shake, smoke them to get them to load up on honey. When a homeless bee arrives at the Q+ hive it will beg entrance; if it brings a gift of honey the guard bees will permit entry.

    Runny honey/crystallisation

This has been sitting on the piano for three years; the top layer is bubbling gently. Will sell easily at market tomorrow; current price £24/kg.

    Anna Nanziri in Uganda

Interesting variation on the Ross Rounds principle. Question for Anna: are the plastic rings re-used, and have local material alternatives been explored? I ask because I wrote to Ross Rounds a couple of years ago to ask whether they intended to develop an alternative material to make the rings...

    Raw honey

That definition of 'raw' is no more meaningful than any other, but digs itself a deeper hole by claiming health benefits. Curious to know whether liberal use of the word 'organic' is supported by EU, Bulgarian or Estonian certification on the back labels...

    Wintering bees in the U.K.

Early days; gets worse in winter. Yes, and if the beekeeper is late with extra boxes they'll build it between boxes, walls, QX and anywhere else. Brace is built for three reasons and it would be difficult to determine which impulse led to its construction: vibration modulation, lack of...

Waitrose, old chap, not Lidl. 🙂

    Wintering bees in the U.K.

No, they work like humans in a supermarket, reaching shelves by alternating position politely in the limited space.

    Wintering bees in the U.K.

6? Only 6? Do you sleep easily at night, knowing that 8mm is beespace! Well, at 6 they would, wouldn't they. :) Irregularity of wild nest comb and the holes & byways through it may permit alternative airflows even though combs are attached above. Conversely, a frame hive with regular beespace...

    Wintering bees in the U.K.

Yes, thick plastic works well as an emergency CB, though of course, sometimes it will remain on all year round, and without any condensation. I have noticed that bees modulate air movement between top bar and sheet using wax and propolis along sections of both top bar edges. The sheet edge is...

    Bee sheds or Similar

JBM's reply was too polite! Open extraction will invite robbing and will increase the chance of disease spread from distant colonies. I have seen photos of rural apiary extraction in Turkey and that part of the world, but they work inside a meshed gazebo and may be miles from other apiaries.

Queen excluder still on over winter

True! A plastic QX will sit on top bars and fondant would block universal access.

    Honey weighing machines

Always a good idea to future-proof processes and equipment, so investment is worthwhile. You might creep up to 10 colonies in two years, and then who knows...

Is the PIR in full contact with the acrylic CB?

Queen excluder still on over winter

Odd; does when I tried it from the link above. This link has a link to it: http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/feedingcandy.html Not been a practical problem. Likely that any dribbles appear randomly and allow bees to move around between the stalactites, whereas if the block sat on top bars it...

Queen excluder still on over winter

There is an advantage to putting fondant onto a QX: without it, fondant will block access across top bars. http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/Fondant%20Peter%20Edwards.pdf

Yes, Derek Mitchell is the source of documented research into hive thermodynamics. A list of most of Derek's published work is at the end of this link: https://llebka.org.uk/assets/documents/derek-mitchel-profile

    Your streamlining tips?

Is that one apiary or three? If three, B and C ought to be near to each other. Would you give an example?

    Honey weighing machines

Still worth buying the bottling machine: Henry gave a detailed assessment of the two main options at post 16 of this thread. At first I thought you wanted an efficient weighing machine and I agree that filling & weighing jars individually is tiresome, but I still do it until money rolls in for...
