There is a really large old one at Port Arthur, being left to grow without clipping. I reckon they might be slow growing. This year the flowering has been absolutely spectacular.

Yes. I got a (rude) surprise recently when I measured the gaps on all of mine more thoroughly with digital calipers. Some of the welded ones weren't too good. That wider gap is over 5mm - and that's at the solid weld. Another thing I wasn't fully aware of, until looking at research recently...

One issue could be that you don't know really know what is in them. If you choose one, it might be a dud. If you saw them being constructed with nice grubs being formed inside, it would be better, but you probably didn't? Could you leave one and cut the others out and see if you can get them...
