Selling honey through a local shop.

Tell me about it. Our Farmers Market circuit had Market Inspectors that regularly inspected for labelling, food hygiene certs, public liability insurance etc. No one was allowed on the circuit without an interview with the Market Inspector, nothing heavy just a 10 minute introduction and...

Much honey bee activity in the garden today

Following a full on afternoon of sunshine activity is back to 50+ honey bees, half a dozen bumble bees and one or two wasps attacking the raspberry canes for all they're worth.

Much honey bee activity in the garden today

The difference an hour or two of sunshine makes, honey bees are back on the raspberry canes in plenty. Not so many as there were a day ago but they're working hard and fascinating to watch.

Selling honey through a local shop.

Have you considered approaching traders at Farmers Markets? We used to be regular sellers on the Farmers Market circuit (jams, pickles and chutneys) and as a side line we would sell both set and runny honey from local apiaries at a mark up of £2.00 per 454g jar on a buy or return basis. We...

Much honey bee activity in the garden today

Not so much activity today, Monday, just a solitary wasp pillaging around the raspberry canes and no sound or sight of a honey bee.

    Varroa, when & where?

    1) According to BeeBase 'first found in the UK (Devon, England) on the 4th April 1992' link http://www.nationalbeeunit.com/index.cfm?pageid=93 2a) Seems they arrived in Northern Ireland (North Down and the Ards Peninsula) 10 years later according to a BBC News report of 24th April 2002 link...

    Good On Him

I'm only a novice but I've seen Jeff Horchoff (Mr Ed) on YouTube tackle similar cut outs such as this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO5SZaZjWVg

    Floor Tile Layout Help please

The best multiple room flowing layouts I've seen have been achieved by the use of varying shapes and dimensions i.e. large and small squares and rectangles. Complicated spaces call for complicated patterns.

Much honey bee activity in the garden today

Much honey bee activity in the garden today, Sunday 7th October. A posse of about 50 or more (what do you call a group of foraging bees?) attacking the fruit bushes and also one or two in the flower borders. Heard the buzz from afar before I saw them. Also saw a massive wasp of maybe an inch...

    Floor Tile Layout Help please

Just seen post #6 The tile run between rooms looks offset in places. Have you considered fitting door thresholds?

    Floor Tile Layout Help please

The so called 'correct' method as described above doesn't always work especially with larger tiles, odd shaped spaces and narrower corridors. The idea with the 'correct' method is to achieve an even part tile border but the problem with that, as i see it, is where the tiles get laid in relation...

    Good On Him

Reading the comments it seems as if somebody had already tried and failed to poison them For completeness I would have liked to have seen the finished job, all bricked up again. I wonder why this job was tackled through the external wall. For the sake of the integrity of the building surely an...

    Brood Box Handles

It can be done with a home made jig and circular saw, YouTube is your friend search 'brood box hand hold' one example here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaWRjpJ5f0w

    Brood Box Handles

At beekeeping I'm a complete novice, in carpentry I have some expertise... My advice would be to use a 25 x 38 mm (1" x 1½") baton. The 38 mm (1½") height is just right to grip with four finger tips under and the thumb above unless you have particular small or large hands. Fix to the brood box...

    Travellers/Gypsies

Maybe an assumption on my part but I'm assuming that the planning application has been submitted because 'a change of use' is required. Therefore the details of distances between boundaries, location of hives, number of hives, number of bees, flight paths etc will assist the planning officer or...

    Time gentleman please...

and Ladies too ;-) As an interested lurker who is yet to connect with the local BKA and take the plunge proper I was wondering... How much time would I need to invest as a beekeeper of one to three hives? Winter vs Summer, evenings, mornings, mid week, weekends etc. Looking to assess if I'll...

    Travellers/Gypsies

Make sure the planning committee is aware the site is immediately next to an apiary. Supply drawings or rough sketches showing details of distances between boundaries, location of hives, number of hives, number of bees, flight paths etc.

    How high can you go?

Just for the ease of lifting a 25lb box on and off the stack you probably wouldn't want to go any more than chest height. Brood makes bees, bees make honey so its probably a 50:50 ratio between brood and honey. If the beekeeper can't work it out I'm sure the bees can. From what I've read, I'm...

    Hi from Leicester

Me too Josh although the more I read the more I'm now having second thoughts. Seems as if one hive may be doomed to failure, two is better than one, three is ... I'm probably wrong, I've been wrong before and know only what i've read over the last couple of months. Welcome

    Hello from NE Essex

I was out walking today and less than two miles from home and just off the public footpath I came across a small compound with nine hives and two Nucs set up on stands in it. It looks as if the locals have a preference for timber based 14x12 National broods and Shallow National supers. I think...
