What's going on at the hive entrance today?

Haha yes its a bit of a runway but I had some issues with European hornets a few weeks back frequently visiting and taking bees as they left the landing board. The Hornets liked to hover under the landing board and grab bees above but once I popped the mini table there I saw one or two come back...

Why are bees building comb in the apiguard eke?

Took this quick video just after extracting the comb can see a few bee's clearing up the bits of comb at entrance, I think I have been very lucky with my first bee's they have been very forgiving for a beginner like myself and let me sit in front of the hive filming just after ripping all their...

Why are bees building comb in the apiguard eke?

Comb in the Apiguard Eke part 2 Well I went in today to remove the comb in the eke and remove 50mm eke and replace with 20mm one as it was a nice day here in the afternoon. All seemed to be going well but the comb was attached to the frame and not the crown board anymore bee's hadn't re...

    Clear Crown Boards

Glass though not sure if this is right but I have read is better to use clear plastic which insulates better & gets less condensation glass can get and stay colder. I know my plastic glazed greenhouse stays a good few degrees warmer than the glass one every winter.

    Clear Crown Boards

Yeah was a bit expensive but it's really thick clear plastic and compared to thinner clear plastic ones on offer for around £20 everywhere else it seemed like a bargain for approx £5 more plus it comes with some insulation and has the small space above to allow for more insulation on top so...

Why are bees building comb in the apiguard eke?

Yeah thanks everyone for advice and opinions it's been a multitude of errors and beginner mistakes for me in my short start at beekeeping but I surely will learn from them and hopefully my bee's are tough and the damage done so far isn't detrimental to their survival. The mesh on the crown...

Why are bees building comb in the apiguard eke?

I think I may have a huge huge issue will post photos in a minute, there is syrup leaking out of the hive from every crack, the inspection board is full of syrup, the floor under the hive has huge puddles of syrup on it. Dead bee's covered is syrup outside the hive I am concerned about the hive...

Why are bees building comb in the apiguard eke?

Thanks for the reply's Yes I did have some feed on and yes there is loads of Ivy here and loads of beds of Sedum in flower. The question I was wandering the most is what do I do in 2-3 weeks time when I have to open up again? Leave the comb, leave the eke on for winter? it's gonna cause...

Why are bees building comb in the apiguard eke?

Well I put my second tray of Apiguard on a few days ago and had some issues when I removed the crown board as there was loads of comb and bees's above the frames in the eke gap and it all broke as I twisted the crown board drowning and covering bee's and the sides of the hive, also took me a...

Bees leaving the hive with bits of Fondant?

I have some fondant in a super above the brood box which the bee's are tucking into but I have noticed some bee's were leaving the hive with tiny bits of fondant in their mouths which confused me. So now I am worried could this be robbing? Or is there another reason for bee's to be leaving the...

    Supers over winter

I probably am but it's my first year having bee's and I have read so many times they need so many stores to survive the winter etc so I have been feeding as much as I can. Also apparently I have loads and loads of brood and not as many stores according to the local bee guy who checked my bee's...

    Supers over winter

I tried this and they just don't seem to be taking it down I have sugar water 2-1 on at 4 pints at a time in the super too, plus bee fondant & Apicandy which they are all constantly eating would this be why they are not taking the stores on the frames down?

    Asian Hornet Christchurch Hampshire

We seem to have many European Hornets where I am and I have lots of ivy in the garden and it has been full of European Hornets this year, looks like they are there mainly to take the insects from it including bee's and the occasional bit of nectar. Unfortunately they found the beehive and at...

    Clear Crown Boards

Where can I get a decent one? Wanted one to go under my insulation for winter so I could have a peek at the bee's without too much disturbance but also wanted one strong enough to support a 4 pint rapid feeder etc if needed. I searched through the forum and read a lot of comments saying you need...

    Reducing hive entrance

My first winter with a beehive so I am going to have to pretty much ask the same question as above as I want to be sure I am doing it right. I have a national with the larger of the two entrance hole reducers on, I am about to install the mouse guard so was wandering do I take the whole...

    Supers over winter

I put two mostly filled frames above in an empty super with small hole in crown board for the bee's to take down 2 weeks ago and they still haven't cleared them out and I can see some capped untouched. I need to get them out soon loads of empty space in there with only the two frames and I...
