What did you do in the Apiary today?

Sunny and warmish here Lovely sunny day with lots of bees on the snowdrops. Not just 1 or 2 but probably 40+.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Almost the only time that i see my bees in the garden is when the snowdrops are out as was the case on Monday. I normally have 3-4 hives in the garden plus the odd nuc. They seem to appreciate the early pollen.

    For the unpatriotic amongst you.

    extracting from unwired frames

Try some local beekeepers and find one who has a radial extractor. Perhaps your local bka has one you can borrow. I never use wired frames in my supers and have very rarely had a problem with combs collapsing.

    Bee fence

Two of my hives are probably closer than 50cm to the trellis and this is not a problem.

    Bee fence

The standard off the shelf six inch trellis is fine for making your fence. I have one panel along one side of my garden apiary (other sides are hedging) and they do not attemt to go through but fly up well above head height before proceding on their way.

    Yield off beans

In my uk experience, it yields quite well and produces excellent honey. My main disappointment this year is that the fields of beans that are usually just down the road are not this year. Go for it, the effort will be worth it.
