What did you do in the 'workshop' today

There may be a post somewhere; I'm not honestly sure. However, having made these ones I think I can improve the design so they're easier to make. I'll post full details once I have that sorted. The main walls are 40mm PIR for the ends and 25mm PIR for the sides, glued together using foaming...

Looks like something from one of the Alien films :D James

    Slow news day in Somerset...

I'm amazed that in what is very much a rural "town" this generated any comment at all... https://www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-news/somerset-man-stunned-after-seeing-9598669 James

    Dumb meter, dumb company

Nor even a mobile phone in our case, because there's no viable mobile signal at home so we have to use wifi calling. James

    Dumb meter, dumb company

As it happens, I already have two (a second for my desktop). Made sense when I was working from home. They've been quite handy this year too, as we've had a ridiculous number of power cuts. James

That could be very tempting indeed. I've never seen those before. I might have to do some more investigation. Thanks. James

    Dumb meter, dumb company

I know it's possible. I have been have tempted to build a system that used CTs on the individual wires for each way in the consumer unit to monitor usage, though it would be a major pain in the bum. What would be ideal would be to have some sort of sensor built into each MCB with a feed that I...

    Dumb meter, dumb company

That just means they don't need to get someone to turn up and disconnect the supply though. There's still a whole rigmarole they're supposed to go through before they actually do so, either remotely or in person. Of course that doesn't stop them being able to short cut the process in the...

IMPORTANT Deadline for registration of poultry

I regularly wonder when reading articles like that one, whether the author actually believes what they're writing, or if it's basically just a dog-whistle piece, written to "appeal" to their target audience (who one assumes must lack the intellectual capacity to consider the topic in any depth...

IMPORTANT Deadline for registration of poultry

:) It's a Terry Pratchett reference, or at least I understood it to be such. I'd be surprised if you don't have at least a passing familiarity with Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven", the most famous line of which is probably "Quoth the raven, 'Nevermore'". In a number of Pratchett's Discworld...

    Dumb meter, dumb company

As far as I'm aware all the electricity suppliers have been told that they have to get a given number of connections (80%?) switched to smart meters or be fined (which happened to a number of them last year). We don't have one, in part because the mobile coverage around here is very poor, but...

IMPORTANT Deadline for registration of poultry

I'm thinking now that it might have been a Myna bird. Such a long time ago that I really can't be sure. I just recall a very dark bird in a cage that definitely wasn't a budgie or canary. James

IMPORTANT Deadline for registration of poultry

From the depths of my memory I have an idea that some elderly relation or other used to keep a caged jackdaw in their house (this would have been early 70s). It might even have learned to say a few words. Was that ever a thing? Budgies and suchlike, sure, but a caged jackdaw seems a bit...

IMPORTANT Deadline for registration of poultry

I don't think there was a form when I registered, just an email address. Indeed. As far as I'm aware, any birds housed indoors with no access to the open air are exempt (unless they get taken to shows or similar). James

    Oxalic acid

As far as I recall a hydrate is solid by definition. The water molecules form part of the crystal rather than the OA (or whatever) being in solution. James
