How to spot a french beekeeper

Found my hive tool yesterday on the roof of the car, numerous journeys and TWO days after I lost it!! Must have sticky rain in Cheshire!

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Spent the day scrubbing and soaking poly kit, but at the end knocked together a honey tipper to save me balancing my settling tank on books etc whilst I fill jars. Didn't have the right size hinges, or screws, but it's practically finished. I slapped on a bit of paint, and will have another look...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Mopped and swept out the water from Storm Christophe that came into "my half" of the garage where ALL my bee equipment is stored. Luckily, most was on shelves, dollies, pallets and so didn't get horribly wet. This is the second time in two years that the water has come off the fields and found...

Underfloor-entrance hives failing to keep out wasps

Like most beekeepers I have this issue most years. From a timing viewpoint I don't tend to nadir any supers until mostly the wasps are done. My routine solution is to use drawing pins to fix a mouse guard to the front of the hive covering the entrance and making sure there are no gaps that the...

    Next decision😂

Beeno, Interested in this comment. This is the first year I've actively collected swarms from elsewhere and all bar one have requeened themselves. Do all swarms, whether prime or cast, often get rid of the queen they swarmed with? Thanks

Poly-hives and woodmouse and chicken damage

No issue with mice in my poly hives (Paynes) and I don't have chickens, so can't comment on their ability to damage the hives. The only things that seem to chew mine are wasps trying to get into the feeders, or bees rounding off edges, or making other ways into/out of the hive.

    Sugar prices

Agreed, you just have to find a store that hasn't already been visited by another local beekeeper!! :nature-smiley-013:

Bee Vac - will this work?

I treated myself to one of these this year, its great and I think yours will work fine. Issues in use are all about the vacuum. I have a Karcher Henry style and with 2 x 45m extension leads I can reach lots of swarms. It keeps going whereas a Dyson I borrowed cut out after 15 mins. I've just...

    Mistake of the week!

Dowsed one with blue colouring during marking. Paint flooded out of the pen.... GRRR

    Preventing casts

In conversation with our bee inspector last spring, he said that he had frequently observed multiple virgin emerging from cells at the same time during inspections. His theory was that the bees held back other new queen's from emerging by covering the cell with their bodies, thus preventing...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Extracted some supers, so got to bed far too late. Returned wet supers to hives for cleaning. Swarm from one hive which had taken up residence in the entrance of the hive it came from despite being transferred into another box on two separate occasions was back. I clip my queens, so am thinking...

    Honey Extractor / Spinner: Recommendation

Got my 9 frame from Carl Fritz at Bee Tradex 5 years ago. Gave me the chance to look at them all before I bought. Yes it was expensive, but not the most. Reflections after 5 years. Quality is incredible. The thickness of the casing and solidity of the build is very reassuring. It has one size...

    Good service Abelo!

If we are doing shout outs to suppliers. Top of my list are Paynes. Ordered one day, delivered 2 days later. Fantastic service. This has happened twice in the past month.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Thankyou so much, I showed this to HWMBO, and he cut the wood whilst I sourced (and collected) the castors. Two things left to do. Firstly the oval cut out - will mark out exactly what I need, before we cut the wood, and secondly, extract some honey to see it in action! Love being able to...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Love your idea. Do you use the brakes when extracting, or let the extractor dance round the honey room??
