Winter Preparations and unuseable frames question

I'm new to beekeeping myself but I was in basically the same situation as you. Over the weekend, I took the honey off, started varroa treatment, and have given them a feeder full of syrup. Miserable weather today so glad I got it all done! In other news, the honey they produced is fantastic :D

    Manuka honey.

I am increasingly dubious about the origin of any honey my bees didn't produce :( http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/08/honey-laundering/

    Solar-powered hive ventilation?

This website makes some pretty bold claims about the effectiveness of providing active hive ventilation: http://www.beecoolventilators.com/ Anyone tried this sort of thing before? I'm intrigued and may build something like it for next year.

    Dowsing

Since someone mentioned Uri Geller, it's worth pointing out that he recently admitted that actually he has just been bullshitting all these years. Actually it seems some companies are that stupid! http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/01/22/dowsing_rod_bomb_detector_bust/

    Dowsing

Dont get me wrong BBG, I would be the last person to try and argue wikipedia was a terribly accurate repository of knowledge but I have never seen any evidence to suggest dowsing works. James Randi has for many years offered a million dollar prize to anyone who can demonstrate such abilities...

    Doom & Gloom weather coming?

Heavy rainfall interspersed with bright sunshine for the last few weeks here in Bristol, plants all around looking extremely lush. Bees are still foraging like champs, lots of yellow pollen.

    Dowsing

AFAIK there has yet to be a test under rigorous scientific conditions where dowsing has been shown to work at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowsing#Evidence

    wasps in hive

I'm starting to feel quite blessed by the lack of wasps in my apiary! Last night I found this crazy video of some poor bees being pillaged by a horde of wasps O.o http://vimeo.com/27531679

    Pollen id?

The only pollen I know by sight is bramble (vast sea of them behind my garden!) and as swarm said, its more of a dull white, plus all the bushes here have finished flowering now.

    getting bees into super

Do you have a queen excluder under the super? My bees utterly ignored the super until I took the QE off for a few days and let HM get up there a bit.

    Anyone in the Bristol area?

Perhaps I chose my words unwisely, I'm not too cheap to spend a few quid to ensure the well being of my girls, it's just that when I contacted my local association, the secretary suggested I wait until November before registering, else I would have to pay the full fee twice this year. Hi Neil...

    Anyone in the Bristol area?

I'm cheap, so I'm waiting until the membership renewal in November before joining the local association :)
