native irish bees wanted before I buy non-native

I'm a south Galway Beekeeper, I'm a member of NIHBS and the local bee keeping association. Like the other comments I would strongly suggest joining the organisation and doing a course first. There will be no problem getting nukes this year I'd imagine because of the good winter survival rate but...

    Incubator for queen rearing

Hi I use an incubator for rearing the queens all the time, it's very handy. If you are buying an incubator especially for the job buy one with adjustable temperature because you should turn the temperature down about 2 or 3 degrees after they hatch out of the cells. They will last longer in the...

    Irish Beekeepers facing 'meltdown'

I'm situated in south Galway, in the west of Ireland. At Christmas 2012 I had 34 colonies, all bursting with bees and with loads of stores, all in polly national hives or polly 6 frame nooks. By the first week of may 9 were surviving. All the colonies that died without exception were headed by...

    Biscuit joiner

Hi, I am a joiner by trade and recently my Dewalt biscuit joiner gave up after 7 years of regular use, the same week I saw them for sale in lidl, I bought it for €28 and so far I have found it nicer to use than the Dewalt. NB. Most Biscuits that are sold are made from compressed Beech, if...

    Poly Nuc Condensation

Hi Robb55, I'm in Galway and this is my first year using polynukes. I have also noticed a lot of condensation in my nukes, in some cases the floors were soaked. I don't know exactly what the solution might be but next tear I'm going to replace the floors with a sheet of mesh. The floors are...

    Cutting insulation

I use a kingspan product called stirazone to make my nukes and hives and that comes up to 8 inches thick, it is a blueish colour and it's very dense. It cuts very nicely on a bandsaw and dosn't burn like polystyrene, I'm sure it would cut without any difficulty with a woodworking handsaws too...
