    Whole or a half ?

An experienced beekeeper once told me, "whatever the question! hive and a half is not the answer" :) Having added supers to create more brood space on my National hives a couple of years ago, yes it added extra space for them to lay which was great, but was a bit of a nightmare to deal with...

    Table saw

Very true, I am lucky at the moment that my mate, who has just qualified as a chippie, is keen to start beekeeping and has a van that can fit 2.4x 1.2 sheets of stuff I the back, but whilst trying to make nucs, I have discovered that my hand saw skills are not really up to scratch, he needs da...

    Table saw

Derek, how have you found the saw, I was thinking of getting one and some feedback from someone who is using one would be great. Can you foresee any problems with cutting down sheets of ply etc, apart from the size of the 8x4 sheets, but I suppose you can add another table to support the ply...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked the hives briefly, just lifting the roof as it was fairly chilly, chucked some feed on the crown board for the lightest hive as I was not wearing a suit and they were clustering above the crown board, managed to get a sting for my troubles, so a first for the season......

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Put together 50 14x12 frames and wax, 4 14x12 ekes and one hive this morning, quite productive really, no chance of getting into the hives though, far too cold and wet, although there is still a flow of pollen going in on al the hives.

Has anyone ever tried using Thorne's packaging material as smoker fuel?

I use the shredded packaging as well, although I start with Newspaper and then once it is well alight stuff in some of the shredded box. I always try to avoid the bits with labels/ tape on as this cant be good for me or the bees :). Before this i was using paper and wood chippings etc, whatever...

    Quiz

How many questions do you intend to ask/how long is the quiz going to take and what level are you pitching to? I suppose if the forum members all pitched in a question you should have a few from which to choose. Starter for 1 what are minimum distances you should move a colonised hive? Or...

OSR flow - when does it begin?

We have a couple of fields of OSR about 1/2 mile away from home, where the bees are, and 2 of the colonies have a super full already, only 14 degrees here today but the polen was coming in throughout all conditions, including some thunder showers. Poly Hive, disappointing news on the 3 week...

Was quite interesting, although had to laugh when the beek got stung close to his crown jewels.

    Hot tub honey?

We have a bird bath full of moss that attracts the bees, sadly not all of them as I have to fish a large number of them out of the swimming pool every day, fortunately there is usually someone on hand to do this so the losses are not too great, probably only four or five a day from 6 colonies...
