    Winter losses 2012/13

I had one hive, Hobby bee keeper and opened them 2 weeks and they were looking very weak in numbers, put some fondant in (THEN LOTS OF SNOW!!) and uncovered them yesterday. Hadn't touched the food and all were starved or frozen by the looks of it, lots of bees head first into the comb. :( So...

    smoker fuel

Wire wool, from tough sheep Wire wool is an excellent thing stuffed into the nozzle, it doesn't need replacing too often, and is very cheap.

    Are all scrub Queens poor?

Centurions had them I have to point out here that there is evidence in Cave drawings, pyramids which depict bees being kept. and Roman writers documented that legions would have beehives because they knew Honey was a useful resource to have to feed and treat wounds.

Bees on the bottom of varroa mesh

Excellent info, big thanks to you all I never thought of actually using their supply of propolis from the beehive itself. I took some brace come off, but it was too cold to mould into the hole, and the light wasn't exactly great with it being cloudy. These are the kind of tips that you cant...

Bees on the bottom of varroa mesh

It was the back and front I stayed there a while watching the ones come in the back from across the wheat field and they were squeezing through a gap between the floor and the removable board. They were also going in the two holes at the front.

    Proud of my bees

do bees go in? Have you got a picture of your wasp catchers. And do the bees not go in and die too?

Bees on the bottom of varroa mesh

The reason they are all clustered in the middle like that is because I had just removed the reducer to take the photo. They are not established enough to defend the whole opening, and with only 5 frames with comb and brood, it will be a short time before they are ready for the next size up...

Bees on the bottom of varroa mesh

I had thought that they might be getting through from somewhere else, but i have checked the gaps for the correx sheet, and the wooden block is very well sized and made. The only thing I haven't checked is if there is a gap by the entrance which they might be slipping through. I didn't think...

Bees on the bottom of varroa mesh

I will get a photo this evening without disturbing them too much, as they are still orientating I would have thought. But just to reply to some of the posts, the mesh is this type here... item number 26081080169 on a very well known auction site...

Bees on the bottom of varroa mesh

I have only had my bees for a couple of days and was wondering if it was normal behaviour if they squeeze through the varroa floor. Is this a sign of too little/ too much bottom space?? I don't want to disturb them until they have had about 5 days to settle into their new place, and I have...

looking for a mentor in Shropshire

I am new to bee keeping in the sense that I have only just purchased a hive, but I have been reading and thinking about it for ages. I have recently been given the space and chance to have a hive at my girlfriends parents house, as they live near RAF Shawbury and are surround by hectares and...

Local shops that stock bee keeping equipment

Is there any local shops or farm shops in Shropshire or the west midlands which stock hive parts, wax foundations etc...?? I have used online stores but the foundations always seem to be a little damaged when they arrive.
