God I love growing our own

Or a motor, a tilt, and an open end so the big stuff can drop out of the end eg into a wheelbarrow.after the soil has dropped through the mesh.

    What chance of survival?

It's surprising what contains cyanide. I wasn't aware of bay (doesn't seem to hurt the bay-hopper on my hedge), but cherry pits have enough cyanide for only a handful to be pretty toxic/fatal if you crack the stones and eat them! I think cooking destroys a lot of it though, so maybe burning in a...

    Pot-shot ID, please

Strange - I would have expected more damage from my (non-fac) air rifle at 20m, seeing what it does to a rat skull or a potato. I could try it on a bit of scrap Kingspan too see (though it's softer) but I'm not shooting a nuc! (I suspect it would penetrate full-thickness). Edit: I got curious...

You should probably get that tuned down slightly. If there was reason to test your rifle it is done with a variety of weight pellets. You really don't want to be guilty of a firearms offence.

    First Inspection

I think it's highly variable in the UK generally, last year spring was great - hoping for the same this year, certainly drought seems unlikely to reduce nectar production after a couple of very wet months!

Although, assuming they didn't have permission to shoot on the site, it is classed as "armed trespass" even with a low power weapon, and carries a 5 year prison sentence! I have an air rifle for target and rat shooting, the same applies if I allow a pellet to cross into a neighbour's land.

    What chance of survival?

I think JBM is being a bit overly negative here, although I accept that there is probably no high quality evidence it works. However absence of evidence is not evidence of absence! Many modern drugs originated from herbal remedies, the classic being digoxin.

Hopefully it will have been enough of a non-event to dissuade the perpetrator from having another go.

Looks like a ball bearing, a BB gun or some air rifles can shoot them. They aren't generally very accurate.

    Can I unite 3 hives?

I saw a "uniting board" for sale once - a mesh screen with a very small section of queen excluder in one corner, and a rim. Like this: https://cornishhoney.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=754

    What chance of survival?

I can only think either on top of another colony as above, but good chance of fighting, or open a stronger colony, shake in some nurse bees, add a frame with a small amount of sealed brood, dummy them down & hope for the best. Or if you have an Abelo 6 frame nuc available which you can divide in...

Chicken Registration by 1st Oct 2024

"The requirements will be set out in legislation shortly and keepers will also be legally required to update their information on an annual basis." So legislation not in place yet and may never happen.

Chicken Registration by 1st Oct 2024

If everyone complied their register might go up by x100 or more, and annual update too - I doubt they could cope beyond just emailing notifications of outbreaks (which I already get). How many households have a budgie, parrot, or pigeons too? In reality lots of hobby level bird keepers probably...

What's flowering as forage in your area

After a busy day, mainly on the nearby willow, a couple of my hives are humming gently this evening! 👍
