O.K. So what did Santa bring you ?

My OH made me a nuc box........... without an entrance, ? 'Well' he said 'he had checked a number of sites and couldn't decide what was the size or correct place to put it as there were so many different ideas on line' So I have to let him know what I want. Still initially strange to be...

    Sealing a plywood hive

I have tried a variety of finishes. including boat varnish, ronseal coloured varnish and the shades stuff with PVA undercoats. I have left the insides. I won't be able to tell until next year if they have been effective against the weather. Bees seem happy and they have 'completely' lined the...

    Problems with my Queen

woo haa, I'm so happy. A lovely bee keeper from my division helped me by giving me 2 frames of eggs. It was quite an adventure in my friends car keeping them warm and navigating country lanes to get them to the hive before they got cold. Put them in, gave them food and left them to get going...

IDIOTS' CORNER - Newbee, out and proud!

Hello Dusty, I'm a newbie too, muddling through. In comparison to last year I can do a bit of bee talk and keep my bees alive. Personally i do find it quite hurtful when you ask on line for info and advice and then persons unknown take a verbal pot-shot. Not sure if a certain .5% of bee...

    Bees Killed My Chicken :-(

I know that you may find this a bit yukky but give your chicken one whole raw egg (no shell). it is like a protein pack and will zip them up. Even when ill they will know exactly what to do with it.

    Crown board

bee-smillie, Hello Big Dave, Unfortunately I am no bee hive making expert, I am just a little bit broke and trying to do bee keeping on the cheap. My Oh and I have been tackling the task of making hives from plywood sheeting and I liked the idea of a see through crown board, so that i could...

    Crown board

Hello, After checking out web prices I have made my own crown board from polycarbonate sheeting ( had some spare). I am very happy as I can now see into the hive quite well without disturbing them.

Can you use Plywood for a Hive?

We have just made 2 brood boxes and 6 supers from ply to save money. i know they won't last as long but they will last for a while if looked after. We used this site to get advice and plans. They look lovely and they are currently being painted. Now I just need to get or grow more bees.

    And really yummy.

    High Rise Query

Why not use it for it's original intention and make loads of dosh and be really popular with the local community? You may end up with a greater profit margin than selling honey? Could bees be used for pollenation purposes?

    Problems with my Queen

Hi Hiveabee, Good luck with your hive, I know how you are feeling at the moment as I am in the same position. I am not going to worry, I'm going to go and build another hive as I am an optimist.
