    Hive splitting

RAB, Thank you for taking the time to reply, I realise that winter is not yet over but as time moves on i've decided to plan early so as not to be caught out. I'm hoping to expand to 4 hives, I have 4 brood boxes and 8 supers with all the ancillary equipment. I have left my current stock with...

    Hive splitting

Morning, My hives, up to now appear of 'over' wintered so far and i'm starting to plan for the coming season, When would be the best time to split each hive? Is there any preparation required before I start? I have been building up equipment which I will be constructing as soon as it starts to...

    Fondant

Afternoon, I put some rolled fondant on the top of the frames of my brood box two week before xmas and replaced the super that was full at the end of summer but appeared all but empty when I had a quick look to make sure all was well after the snow. Ive had a quick look today and a good half...

    Rolled fondant on frames

I originally removed the QX and left them the brood box and what was a full super, I've put the fondant between the super and brood box and left the crown board and roof in place!

    Rolled fondant on frames

My bees have been on the syrup and have had plenty of stores, The colony seemed particulary sluggish. I've been in a rush so rolled some fondant and just laid it over the frames. Anyone see a problem with this?

    Blocking the QX

I have a shuffle round in the brood box and in 5 days the bees drew out and filled the frames. So I put on a QX and a super, there are some bees slowly drawing out a frame in the super but they appear to be trying to block up the holes on the QX. this makes me wonder if this is stopping fast...

    EFB all clear

I'm in North Yorkshire, but the great thing is that it was caught so quickly that it never got to spread and the area remains clear. This is both a result and a lesson. My intention is just to buy locally.

    EFB all clear

For those that have followed my EFB problems! I've had the bee inspector call today for my 6 week inspection post EFB. We burnt my EFB infected bees and I chose to restock which then required a six week inspection. This was done today and there given the all clear and the standstill notice...

    Supering

Morning, Thanks for the very useful replies, I'll now write the story so far and how from my perspective it all unravelled. I have been interested in beekeeping for about 4 years and have purchased many books and gathered what information I could off the internet. The problem was that I lived...

    Supering

Regarding my EFB problem, For starters the Bee inspector was top draw, once I explained my level of experience and the whole story he gave me some very sound advice and couldn't do enough to help me regain my confidence. Regarding the original supplier I have had nothing but trouble, I was...

    Supering

I had EFB earlier on this summer and had my colony destroyed, I was lucky enough to get a new nuc and they appear to be thriving! The have rocketed across the brood box! I have put on a QX and super but the bees seem very uninterested in venturing upward. The bolsom it going crazy nearby and...

    European Foul Brood

I've not been put right, there has been email to'ing and fro'ing all day with no resolution. I now believe i'm just being fobbed off! I've been offered all sorts:- 1) Replacement bee's from an apparently clean hive some 300 miles from my home, collection at my expense. 2) A continental queen...

    European Foul Brood

Hi Lambo, Yep its me, i'm absolutley gutted at the outcome as i've ben looking into beekeeping for years but have only been given the chance this year. All was well researched and I looked into several suppliers choosing the one from Norfolk due to a very convincing sales pitch. I've had the...
