A kettle? You think I have room for a kettle in there! It's a trip down the garden to the kitchen for that - unless my lovely wife brings me a brew up! ;)

Nifty! I like that - just need to get hold of a decent sized bottle!

    Swarm Box design

I use a NUC with a mesh floor. The roof has four vent holes in it and the crown board has two long slotted vents (covered in mesh), this allows for plenty of ventilation while in transit. The roof has clamps to lock it in place so there is no need for straps to secure. This doesn't actually...

    Fondant Feeder

Thanks for the input everyone. The partition was an important aspect of what I was try to achieve and that was to enable the empty portion to be opened to add fondant without disturbing bees dining on the remains of the last feed. However, I really like LJ's idea of the 75mm eke, anything that...

    Fondant Feeder

Cheers Little John, appreciate the feedback. I'm actually considering the opposite approach and using a smaller mesh, one that would enable bees access to the fondant through the mesh without getting into the feeder. The plus side to this of course is the fact I wouldn't need to divide the...

Here you go, photo of one of the NUC's I made using the aluminium sheet to cover the roof. It's very easy to work with and fix in place with a staple gun.

Or, if you know of any printers locally, you could ask them if they have an old aluminium printing sheet they are chucking away! They usually measure about two foot square (depending on the press they use) and are a disposable item to them, use once and binned! They are ideal for covering a...

Nice tidy job for a quick fix NUC made in a hurry! I would agree with Foxylad, best solution is to cut a feedhole in the Perspex and drill out some air vents in the roof. You just need to fix some mesh in place and it should be fine. One other thing though, I'd cover the roof with something to...

    Hive positioning Poll

I have two hives at home in a sunny spot and two a couple of villages away in a sheltered spot. Those in the sheltered position are doing much better than those at home.

No offence taken Redwood, appreciate the thought. It's given me something to ponder on.

    Fondant Feeder

Hmm... Year one, an acquired hive that was in a mess and very weak, saved by some very helpful people in the local club I joined. Year two... two late swarms, but thanks for your helpful comment.
