I can't see any numbers on the ring, so perhaps it's a male/female or year identifier from a particular colony.

Up in the frozen wastes of North Preston!

Just found this on the side of the main road near me. It's quite small and very yellow and of course dead! It's quite obviously a finch of some sort but it is so yellow. Strange that it has plain red ring on its leg. Anybody know what it is?

Thanks for your comments. That was the general idea behind the circular. The two hogs that I have picked up over the last couple of weeks were probably just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. There must be quite a few more that havn't been found around here. I'll find out where it's coming from.
