    Extractor spares

Lol. I have cleaned last year's cappings. Yuk. Not there. And been foraging and for something in the hardware store...and possible success. £1.99. Robbers, but if I am back in action, worth it

    Extractor spares

I don't think it has sheered off. I think it must be buried in last year's cappings ... going to the local hardware shop when it opens

    Extractor spares

So this was underneath the drum . It has a ballbearing in it that the spindle rests on. It looks like there was a nylon bolt that held the screw part and that plastic screw you can see is about 1.5 cm across

Spending money on a fancy water dispenser for bees

Thanks for ideas. They want to do something highly visible. I think the pond would be best, but will put the chicken feeders to them too. Would you put salt in the water? I think they put salt in with the koi which seems an attractant.

Queen cells with only royal jelly?

Young larvae are translucent and tiny. They are very difficult to see. They should be on the surface as otherwise they drown. It is enough to see the royal jelly to know they want to swarm.

Spending money on a fancy water dispenser for bees

Hello Looking for advice please. I have a contract to keep bees on a industrial site. I have about 12 colonies there. They would like to buy a fancy watering system for the bees to stop them going in the adjoining koi ponds. I have said there is little point and sent links of how to make...

Poor mating results/ queens going missing

I have some bluetits that have been feeding their babies on my bees. They tend to choose the drones, but some of the queens have gone missing in action too. It looks like the birds have eaten them as they return from mating flights.

More beekeeping as not in paid work

I havent had a proper paid job since the end of November, being self employed is tricky, and others in household are not net contributors, so times have been lean. I have been trying to make a bit of money from the bees, as lentils are delicious, but you don't want to eat pulses at every meal...

    Have I 'won' or not

You have won the battle, but not the war, and are not yet on track to. You have not lost the bees today - Yay! - BUT they are still in swarm mode and will give swarming another go soon, probably tomorrow. Ideally before 11am, unless it is cool and rainy..... Find the queen ( there are probaly...

    Supers full of pollen

If the bees don't clear out the pollen when you put the supers back to clean, it sometimes goes mouldy over Winter, in which case, I scrape them out, sometimes leaving holes in the comb, which the bees repair. The other thing to think about is WHY they are puttng pollen in the super. Is it...

Too late to feed light syrup now?

Once I've got the supers off I'm starting to feed light syrup to my apiaries that are in travelling distance of foulbrood notification. Hoping that will help keep them close to home. Don't normally bother, just feed heavy syrup later, but if I can make it less worth their while to go out...
