I am trying out a double brood box (national) with home-made spacers either side in each brood box. So I have 8 frames in each brood box.
I have taken the idea from the BBKA News (May 2014, page 163) “Choice of Hive” by Ken Gorman. The idea is that you have a tall but narrower brood...
I was rather put out by the statement in the BBC report:
"Writing in the journal Nature, the team says that beekeepers should keep their honeybees as free from disease as possible to stop the spread."
A rather odd if not insulting thing to say as if we don't give a damn about the health of our...
I also did a pick up yesterday morning at 08:40 and was rather impressed with the rather slick operation. BTW sorry if this sounds like an ad for the company, it is just that I have got rather fed up with organisations with a very shoddy planning and organisation.
if the area could have been...
It was an established colony, we purchased at no cost if it died, that appeared to have just squeaked through the winter. The local SBI had just checked them out:judge: giving them the all clear that it was a very small but healthy colony.

My idiots guide to pollen (a great help being a Newbee) comes up with Common Lime, and Field Scabious as the only dark orange red pollen (colours shown are approximate :paparazzi: )
The same question was raised on this forum a few years ago:

Thanks EricA
We have got the Apiguard ready to go. We had read about the MAQS but as it was new and we knew so little, decide to go with the well known Apiguard.
Thanks for the advice on the supers that all makes sense so we will try above the Crown board first followed by putting the super...
Ok I live in the sunny South of England by the coast and my wife and I are in our first year of bee keeping, one National hive.:nature-smiley-016::hurray:
In July the bees moved all their capped honey and nectar that was in the brood box to the super. :spy:The super was filled and we then added...
:thanks:
We have just nipped out (21:00) and placed the second crown board on the top with the porter set to allow bees out of the super.
The super appeared empty as we took off the roof apart from one bee :hurray:
But still a good idea to restrict or stop access from other bees or wasps...
We only have the one crown board with porter below the super. Should we add a second above the super with the porters set to let them out.
Can the bees get back in via the cone escapes?
