    Candy Sugar

I'm concerned about the cold weather so made up some candy sugar using Bee-Keeping Practice by F S Stuart. I followed the instructions and put 2 pints water 12 pounds sugar and 4 sachets of Dr Oetker Cream of Tarter. However this morning the candy sugar seems very hard. How can I rescue it...

Putting extracted supers back on the hive

Thanks for all the advice-much appreciated. However I have another problem. Because I finished late I put the extractor outside thinking the bees will clean it up(75 metres from the hives). There was only the minimal amount of honey left (perhaps1/4 of an inch but when I looked this morning...

Putting extracted supers back on the hive

I extracted some honey yesterday but the frames still feel quite heavy ( maybe there is some residue rape seed, although I did extract after the rape harvest). I am going to put them back onto the hives for the bees to clean and use for their winter stores. Do I put them above or below the queen...

    Drones

Sorry I have been away. I started this year with only 2 hives but the hive in question had several queen cells. Two of these were moved to separate hives with some frames of bees and nectar. One of these is doing well and the other surviving but quite weak. The hive then swarmed . I collect the...

    Hive Roof

Being a newcomer(pardon the pun) sometimes things are not obvious. They are just learnt at the beginning and become common sense with the passage of time. When I inspect my bees some get under the roof-If it's bee tight they must die then.

    Hive Roof

I'm building a new roof and the last time I made one it was very tight-too tight. If I give it an extra quarter of an inch is that likely to be a problem or is it meant to be bee tight?

    increasing number of hives

Thanks for the advice. Being a newcomer I'm sorry if I ask silly questions but I did not see the queen last year so she was not marked. and as there are so many bees this year I suspect I will not find her. Will this work?.If I leave the brood box on the bottom of the hive then the QE then 2...

I have 2 hives. The first is on a brood and a half and is very strong. The rape seed is out and I put my first super on last week. The second hive is on 6 frames and is not bad but nothing like as strong as the first. Both hives have plenty of eggs, larva and brood as well as pollen and nectar...

    Hive quiet Part 2

Does it matter?-I still think my medicine of a few pints,a glass of mead, or a cup of tea(with honey of course) is the answer. I've always thought that texting, e-mails and forum posts are never a substitute for good conversation.Often the written medium results in more questions than answers...
