EH Taylor Extractor - Ball Bearing Size

Thank you for your reply, it poses some interesting questions. As the gap between the extractor shaft and the base of the housing on the floor of the barrel is slightly cylindrical in nature, a single ball bearing probably wouldn’t support the shaft/cage without another type of spacer being...

EH Taylor Extractor - Ball Bearing Size

I should have mentioned that I left a message with Thornes earlier and will chase again tomorrow. However, with honey extracting season upon us, I'm seeing if I can get an answer from alternative channels - just in case!

EH Taylor Extractor - Ball Bearing Size

Hi, I have an old EH Taylor polythene extractor and it seems to be missing the ball bearing that sits at the base of extractor shaft. The flexible couplings has come apart a couple of times when extracting and this would explain why - the combined weight of cage/shaft/frames has literally been...

EH Taylor Honey Extractor - Identifying Plastic

Thank you, xray7 - that's a really useful tip. It's great that these old extractors are still trundling along but they are bound to have a few parts that need replacing!

EH Taylor Honey Extractor - Identifying Plastic

Replacing the cage is a good idea, I haven’t tried loosening the grab screws yet so that’s something to look forward to! It’s the cage/central bar coming loose from the connector that joins it to the motor that’s the really big problem for me. Perhaps changing the grub screws will help. One of...

Thanks, John - I’ll be doing the same for mine and that should extend its life.

EH Taylor Honey Extractor - Identifying Plastic

Good idea, although I think the lids can be successfully restored. I do have problems with the hex/grub screws coming loose mid-extraction, so I've dropped a line to Thorne to see if they can advise on updating some of the components. They are usually very helpful.

EH Taylor Honey Extractor - Identifying Plastic

Aah, I thought the Thorne's extractors looked quite similar - I didn't realise they were essentially the same design!

EH Taylor Honey Extractor - Identifying Plastic

Hi, I have an old E.H. Taylor motorised honey extractor and as part of some general repairs, I need to fix the plastic lids which have cracked or torn over the years. I'm going to use epoxy resin, but key to a successful fix is knowing the type of plastic. I've done some research and perhaps...

    How to stop cast swarming

Hi everyone, I know there are lots of tips and advice on how to prevent cast swarms (leaving one open queen cell, etc). However, due a variety of reasons I unfortunately split a very string colony (moved old queen to nuc) and didn't manage to remove many of the queen cells. That delayed the...
