    New book,by John Harding.

I've been using his methods and not had to treat any of my colonies that are placed on areas of 'high vibrations' for three years . A couple that have ended up in wrong places for various reasons (this last year) did need treating, they will be moved soon. Varroa counts have not reached more...

    Varroa Treatments

I use Hivemakers recipe but only when monitoring shows its needed. Note, I do sugar dust if I think its been too long with very low count and dont allow them to get to DWV stage or able to see varroa on bees stage. Ok, I mean been able to not let them get to DWV stage. Did use Oxalic the second...

    Extracting honey without an extractor

Yep, old extractors worked like that but not over your head. A broomstick with a conical type container attached, one side to hold the uncapped frame and the other to catch the honey. Cant remember how they spun it though, looked easy.

    My Trap Out

Queens is right as they have been in there a while, short or long I dont know. I was called to a swarm that had moved into a roof space shortly before. Was told no way into roof space so decided to try a tempting 'box' with a frame of new comb for queen and old comb for the bees. I put it on the...

    Pyracantha

There is one at one of my out apiaries, owners tell me that they (bees) have been all over it again this year, I saw them all over it last year. In full flower. We also have holly in flower at home but not noticed any bees on it yet.

    New & Old & a gift horse

Hmm. I tell all potential newbees these days to A: get along to an apiary meeting and make sure they are ok with bees And B: Get on a course and start learning. There is a lot you must know before having bees and even more that you could know.

What type of bees do you like best?

    M. Mellifera (native) and local mongrels that do well.

    Winter losses 2012/13

I lost out of 11. Went early on, queen failure. Was going to requeen but supersedure queen started laying worker brood beginning of September. Must've then gone wrong?

What do you do with old used foundation and has this changed over the years?

Have seen really black beeswax candles on a stall at a show, there 1 minute, all sold 3 hours later. Lots of normal colour ones left, guess they did have more normal ones but does show that black ones have a market. (Goths?)

    Because of the long winter

    Rock bottom

Not sure why they're supposed to be 11 frames but fit 12, however, OSB (Rose boxes) are made to fit 12 and dummy. Helps to counteract lack of depth in boxes of brood I assume.
