Two Queen Conundrums - Advice, please

    1) I have had Q- colonies where they did not attempt to raise an emergency queen, even with lots of larvae. 2) I think that sometimes workers move eggs around.

    The Queen is dead.....

Even if the emergency queen is A1, super, amazing, you will have lost many weeks. (Couple for her to emerge, couple for getting ready to mate, couple to start laying.) In that time you will have missed the season. If you want honey this year, you will probably want a laying queen in now.

Conserving honeybees does not help wildlife.

    Sort of my point :-)

Conserving honeybees does not help wildlife.

I don't know where beefriendly gets those density figures. I live in the country and there are at least 30 apiaries within a 10km radius. Each of those apiaries is likely to have more than one colony. That is from BeeBase... so there will be lots of unregistered apiaries as well.

Bumble bee vs honey bee colony

Try explaining that to folk who want you to collect a swarm... that turns out to be bumblebees :-). I thought it might be a useful link to send them. You are lucky having both. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Bumble bee vs honey bee colony

If you ever have people asking the difference between a honey bee colony and a bumblebee colony, here is a useful video. Ignore the audio. The chap is talking about nematodes. https://youtu.be/m91PsvXZbO4

    Sky high honey

How many customers do you think you would lose? 10%? You would still sell the same amount in terms of money, but would greater profit due to reduced bottling/labelling costs. 100 jars at £4.50 = £450. Allow £1 per jar for bottling/labelling. Profit £450 - £100 = £350 Lose 10% of customers...

    Driving test "Dumbed Down"!

Of course, folding a map incorrectly is the eighth deadly sin, (but the most deadly).

Oxalic sublimation with brood in hive

Emyr, that's the first set of explanations that make any sense. 5 day hardening off and persistence of OA crystals. When I looked at mathematical models of SINGLE treatments, rather than a sequence, a treatment to a brood-less colony gave protection for about 3 months, whereas a treatment to...

A quote for foundation - recent experience

As the owner of a small business, I have always been taught NOT to be the cheapest, but to position my product and its pricing in accordance with its perceived quality. (There will always be newcomers offering cheaper prices. Look for them in a year or two and they will not be there.) Often...

    Driving test "Dumbed Down"!

GPS in the driving test Had to have a giggle - people complaining that people should learn to read a map rather than use the GPS. I don't remember the test including reading a map while driving... or even parking up to read a map. Had a lovely mental picture of someone with a map over the...

    Sky high honey

Raw honey? As in exactly what bee keepers produce? It's all in the marketing. 'Perceived value' Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

12 x14 brood box full of brood.

I have one colony Ina similar state. The bees inspector was here yesterday and expressed surprise that the queen had obviously laid up an entire frame of eggs in a day 14x12. That queens mother was similarly prolific. By a week later last year she had stuffed two 14x12 brood boxes and was ready...

Allergic beekeeper died from a sting

From allergic reactions I have experienced, so not scientific and not in response to bee stings, there is not a lot of option for running on the spot. The drop in blood pressure is rapid and sufficiently debilitating to prevent any running. In my case, a food allergy which is triggered so...
