    easy swarm

Nice and easy, also proves they don't read... or at least don't respect signage

    My new hive ...

Love it, very much a fan of making hives from what you can get hold of, and that wall thickness should make it nice and cosy for them.

    Laying Worker with Queen Cells

Thanks for the answers guys, Oliver, I read introducing a queen cell to a colony with laying workers won't work as they think they have a queen, so demareeing a colony to get a decent queen cell may be a waste or time? I'll accept a scrubby clean being superceded over a laying worker :)...

    Laying Worker with Queen Cells

Without going into a long winded story, I have a 5 frame nucleus which has 2 queen cells made from a test frame I put in as they lost their virgin queen, so I know they aren't drone eggs....But just started finding eggs everywhere on the walls and bottom of empty cells and upto 4 eggs per cell...

Edited, having seen one on a well known recycling website last week, was going to put a cheeky offer in, but then spotted how much new ones this size retail at nowadays..

    Swarming Trigger & Boards

Hard question, lots of views and only one reply. Thanks for the reply MasterBK, read some past posts on the forum, seems some people have experienced swarms after implementing the Snelgrove board, but its not common. Some wait till there's a new laying queen in the top box and the lower queen...

    Swarming Trigger & Boards

Over the last week, I've done an artificial swarm the 'regular' way, and a second using a Wedmore board I knocked up. I want to try a Snelgrove board so I can bleed bees back into the parent hive but what's niggling at me is how does it stop the hive swarming? I mean, the Snelgrove board has...

    Fly in the papers.

My Gran saves anything bee related for me from the papers, this one made me smile. In ripley and heanor news, (other papers are available) someones jumped on the band wagon with a story on bees, and (unless I'm mistaken) used a stock photo of a fly rather than a bee. :winner1st...

    Newbie reporting for duty

Wasps, Mason bees, and Bubble bees can start from just a queen so it's a shame you can't start from one honey bee to full size hive, it would be a great project to watch develop. Hmmm, what would be more awesome would be a Bombus Bombus Swarm :icon_204-2: sorry going off topic. Welcome bee-smillie

Advice re newly made up nuc please

I wouldn't disturb them daily, is it one of the poly nucs that has a feeder? You could give them some 1:1 syrup if you were worried about them not getting enough water.

I'm planning on going to the next meeting, keep an eye out for someone with spikey blonde hair and black eye brows! I hope the buffet has honey related items :p oh and cake for VG, GB, and Luminos. Just found and marked last years queen that remained evasive, added supers to two hives...

    small scale grain growing

You could get a bag of mixed corn meant for chickens and grow lots of types together ;) It's cheap as chips and easy to grow especially if you have chickens as they will scratch up your grass and spread it around for you. :)

    Making NUCs

Hi Andy, I'm pretty new to this game, but I think the answers in the question, it would be an emergency queen cell, although I'm sure it happens, I would split it another way if possible. Maybe still a little early for splitting, we've not really had a run of warm weather yet and I haven't...
