    Paynes Poly National Feeder

The hive roof is supposed to be the 'lid' of the feeder tanks. This may be a problem if you have the "old-style" roofs, which are a tight fit especially on the newer production (denser) boxes which seem to "spring back" and expand a little after they come out of the mould. The new, deeper roof...

Goulson talk on YouTube (deserves its own thread)

Nothing to do with one-upmanship. This thread was discussing a lecture - link posted at the start. You have been "having a decent debate" without bothering to see the lecture. In my book, that's not having a debate, its arguing for the sake of it and one's prejudices. Some would even call...

Goulson talk on YouTube (deserves its own thread)

Sorry, but that cheap shot misses the target by a mile. It isn't a "field study" and nobody claimed it was. It is biochemistry research. You don't discover that in a field study! // And, incidentally, you are following the 'line' of the pesticide manufacturers - "well yes, laboratory...

Harvesting - But Granulated Honey In Comb

Just to mention that OSR and Ivy may be the most common modern UK nectars promoting granulation, but they aren't the only ones. Worth bearing in mind by anyone contemplating investing in a "flow hive".

Sorry, but your prejudice is showing! You call someone "disingenuous" because you expect him not to have done something. You even "bet" that he didn't do it. You lose your bet, AND your credibility in this discussion. What a pity you never checked the lecture you are discussing! (You...

Goulson talk on YouTube (deserves its own thread)

At 11:45 into his lecture, Goulson comprehensively demolishes the idea that using Neonics is some sort of alternative to spraying - in practice they are being used in addition to lots of spraying. If anyone missed it, go back and watch. ISTR that UK use of 'conventional' pesticides had...

Goulson talk on YouTube (deserves its own thread)

I've found this, which I think is what he must have been referring to - "Neonicotinoid clothianidin adversely affects insect immunity and promotes replication of a viral pathogen in honey bees" http://www.pnas.org/content/110/46/18466.abstract Neonic affects bees/insects immune response to...

    Paynes Poly National Feeder

I know of a few people who have added mesh (of one sort or another) under the removable panels to prevent bee-access to the tanks when the level gets low. The alternative is to top up before the level gets that low ...

Harvesting - But Granulated Honey In Comb

Among your options are 1/ controlled meltdown of both comb and wax. The pro kit for this is called an Apimelter. Many bee farmers seem to have them, and those with links to hobbyist associations are usually happy to provide a meltdown service (for a small cost). Simply melting them yourself is...

And if you have yet another 6 minutes to spare, have a listen to what the Chief Operating Officer of Neonic manufacturer Syngenta had to say in his own YouTube posting, again from 2013. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJHZsqSJku4 Anyone want to buy a used car from him?

And as an interesting contrast, DEFRA themselves published their own expert's views (from 2013) Just 6 minutes from Prof Ian Boyd - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYas4fTWm04 Impressive, huh? /// Added later - It turns out he is an expert on polar sea mammals. Does it show?

There is also on YouTube a shorter version of this lecture that Goulson delivered to a French conference (organised by the wonderfully active UNAF). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jHYQla0KQY Its mostly the same stuff (same waistcoat, same shirt! :)) but you don't get to see the screen with...

    What label for Orcio jars

If you are really an amateur beekeeper (and incidental honey producer), it may be advantageous NOT to present your product too 'professionally'. ;)

Maybe worth flagging up a response from Goulson to a comment on the YouTube page ... This time round its bumblebees that are "the canary in the cage".

Source for that information? Goulson has actually done a study on that very subject, funded by DEFRA, who, for some undisclosed reason refuse to let him publish his results. (I wonder why?) Check the lecture video at 42:30, then the next minute and a half.
