I've got a colony that's turned quite nasty, it really hits your confidence doesn't it.
I did exactly what you did, layered up and just focused and got on with it. They have plenty of stores and a low varroa drop so other than a heft every now and again they are on their own till spring...
I made this fudge again the other day, but didn't trust that it would set so I brought up the boiling temperature. It made the most beautiful toffee I've ever had. :D
That sounds about right, Is that the same size as the current ones? I thought it might be a Thorne.
Thanks for your help.
I've sent a message to Bee Equipped to ask about theirs, but I guess I'll just have to save up to get the Thornes ones.
If only it were that easy ratcatcher.
Itma - I'm not sure of the make, I bought it second hand and there no marks on it at all. I would have thought that most cooling racks are food safe, although I realise plated ones would not last as long. I was thinking something like the rack from this...
I've got a 9 frame radial extractor, but have a few deep frames to extract. Thornes have the tangential screens but they are £90 :eek. I have read that someone made screens using cake cooling racks. Has anyone got any advice or plans they could share.
Thanks. :D
Confused
I'm on double brood and am thinking to going to a single extra deep. I was a bit concerned about the weight, but moving brood boxes is very heavy and a lot of disruption to the bees. I'm still not totally sure what to do.
I've tried to make soft set using the pestle and morter method. It's a lovely colour and the texture is good, but it is quite runny and doesn't seem to want to thicken up. I made it about a month ago, am I just being impatient?
Thanks for the advice Meidel, I think I'll have a go at making a Horsley board and trying it on my garden hive, if this works I'll make more for my others.
My swarm control this year didn't exactly go as planned so I'm looking at other methods. I have limited space in my garden so I'm looking at vertical artificial swarm techniques.
What are the pros and cons of the Snelgrove or Horsley boards?
You are quite correct, there were several supers on top. I was hoping to not go into the whole set up of the hive as quite frankly it was a mess, with missing frames, a mixture sn1 and sn4 frames with random spacing. I think FiL got a little overwhelmed.
