    It is mostly down to momentum/inertia. "That's what everyone uses so I will too". If you want a cheap, easily-constructed hive system, consider the Rose Hive. Same footprint as BS National, so uses the same stands, floors, crown boards and roofs. Frames and foundation available from Thornes.

    It is not a good idea to use all foundationless frames in a box at the same time. They should be placed alternately with drawn frames (or foundation if you are just starting out and don't have any), otherwise the bees will get creative with the comb!
