Using a box with the same external dimensions as the rest of the kit makes beekeeping a lot easier. The flat area for frame rests give me no issues either.
However if you only have MB or the Paynes offering just stick with them.

I have too been thinking along Mike Palmers lines and using my existing National kit.
I have successfully overwintered, over the last few years, colonies in wooden five frame nuc boxes that are strapped together. It enables me to use standard roofs, shallow boxes, ekes etc.

Rob N who organises the bulk buy stuff for the BFA asked a while ago about bulk buying of hive parts and there was only one person who talked to him about frames in particular. I suppose there would need to be a consistent demand for certain frame sizes so fixed prices can be offered, I don't...
I don't use runners in my poly hives and the lugs don't get too stuck on the flat rests. I have found that if I just use the boxes as supplied without any modification they work fine, including just putting the feeder onto the top box without a shim.
I used a shim once and the bees built a lot...
