    Allotment beekeeping

It really depends on the agreement, allotment holders sign. In the last two years we have changed allotment agreements, and "we" are self-managed, with land we rent from the Council. and we've now amended all agreements, so no livestock can be kept, bees, chickens and rabbits. Because of the...

    Paper re allergy and immunotherapy

Interesting the quack advised me to take antihistamines before going to the bees! but then again he did also add, "you do this for a hobby, I would pick a new hobby", that was after an incident where I turned into a Klingon for a week! When took over total of 100+ stings to head and wrist! (when...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

fitted a wasp baffle to one of my hives, which is under attack, in the rain, plenty of wasps around, no bees other than the roar of bees coming out of the other 3 hives, very defensive because of the wasps, but they are keeping them out. Fed yesterday evening, and will continue feeding and...

Wasps entering hive, and being let in, stung to death!

Thanks, yes seeing a lot of that in my hive, just odd this hive lets them in, and others do not, maybe it's because these bees have a much better temperament, and very easy to handle, compared to other hives, these are from a different Beekeeper further North than me, in an area with not many...

Wasps entering hive, and being let in, stung to death!

I wasn't sure what size of conduit, either 25mm or 45mm, I don't suppose it matters I purchased both and fitted one on the hive under attack, the other 3 hives are so primed and defensive, they were all out, when I entered the apiary! Waspbane will be arriving as well, and will close the hive...

Wasps entering hive, and being let in, stung to death!

Okay, so opinions on wasps attacking and entering hives, it's odd all hives (4) have entrance reduced to single bee space, 3 hives are handling them well and keeping them out, but the largest colony, decides to let them in and attack and sting them and kill them. I've also got some smaller...

Opinions Queen D58! Time to go ! What would you do ?

Looks like Queen D58 (that's what she's labelled), is doomed. Prime swarm caught May 29th. This was a very large swarm, hived into national hive standard brood box, it's been a very strong hive, but I always feared D58 was not really laying well. I thought maybe she had a break in laying, so...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I cannot get a break, I saw a swarm flying over my apiary this afternoon, I thought it was going to go into the bait hive at the Apiary, it was close, there have been some more interest in last few days in the bait hive on my bay window. I was already in a bee suit, to do weekly inspections...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thanks It felt like it, stressed, tired, I wish I was back at work, that's easy in comparison! I just hope they now stay after all the excitement! Just checked this aft, and bees at the original site seem to have disappeared eventually.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Having a day off today, after yesterdays fun and games! "Carry on Beekeeping" or "Carry on SWARM" - with Hancock's Half Hour (that's my surname!) 6.30am - Phone call there is a HUGE swarm in the village! I didn't think bees swarmed that early! Unless from the day before! 7.30am - Bloody hell...
