    Moving a WBC

Hello I need to move a split into a WBC and so need to move it over to an out apiary and back again a while later. Would it be easier to make a temporary floor and roof for this job rather than taking the whole hive which will not strap up easily?

    Arnia Hive Monitor

Well I contacted them back in Feb about getting some units as part of the trial and got a reply which was along the lines of 'please wait'. Since then nothing and nothing new on their website.

    Cambridgeshire hive called the "Cottages"

A similar hive to this (except it is double walled like a WBC) is the Th*rnes Centenary Hive which you can view on their website. 100 years ago a Wragby School master asked his friend, Edgar Henry Thorne, a local joiner and wheelwright if he could make him a beehive...............and we have...

How does your BKA communicate with you

The way to communicate with members is to use the shotgun approach since most Associations have a range of people some of whom are right up to date i the C21st and using tablets, phones, etc for communications and others who have barely staggered into the C19th abd still think that steam trains...

SBKA - Hastings and Rother Winter Programme

Hi Ray No I am afraid I have been unable to attend any of the talks so far since Saturday afternoon is the busiest time of my working week and unlike the summer, business is not so good that I can employ staff to cover for me and have to do the work myself. Am going to make a special effort to...

    Warre stand height?

Couple of breeze blocks with a paving slab on top. Give you something heavy to attach a hive strap to and that way nothig will fall over. Unless you make the stand quite wide (in all directions) there is no weight to it and it simply increases the tipping angle rather than making the hive more...

    Building a Masie's WBC

Normally the bottom of a WBC is a square of wood at all the same height and so the 'sides' rest on top of the frames. However this way creates a rebate above the frame ends. Idea came from Beesource plans.

    Building a Masie's WBC

So here is the finished box, showing the extra 'pale' bit of wood added at the bottom of the end and then an inside view or two showing the beespace created. Sorry the last picture is out of focus but you get the idea.

    BBKA Guide to Beekeeping

Heidi - Got it, read it, use it as the bible for my Warre hive, lent it to another beek, she now has a Warre hive, GOT IT BACK. But for the BBKA exam, probably best to use the BBKA book plus some other references as it does not answer all the questions.

    Foundationless Frame - Comments?

Beekeepers seem patent mad, mainly one suspects in the hope of making their fortune. Patent hives, hive parts, etc. Perhaps they shuld take a leaf out of Volvo's book. Nils Bohlin for Volvo developed the 'three point seat belt' and was awarded a US Patent on the design. But Volvo decided not...

    Hive Franchising

And that is justification????? So it is ok for experienced beekeepers to rip people off but not for newbies? Nice! The reality is that running a business with bees is perfectly jusifiable and since this is a company should it go wrong, the public have a greater oportunity to get redress than...

    Building a Masie's WBC

The first test box hs been completed in a dry run (no gluing and using screws in the corners.) It worked out very well and the frames are hanging on their metal runners a beespace off my flat surface and with a beespace rebate over the frame ends. My only problem is that the box has a slight...

    National inside a WBC?

Yes it can be done. 1) Some WBC manufacturers make their lifts large enough to go over a National box. 2) There is a chap on fleabay who was doing WBC-National conversion hives 3) You could make your own using the plans from Beesource and adjust the measurements. The bees will have no...
