Hi Just forget about spacers, castleations and self spacing frames. Self spacing frames are too dear when you have allot of frames, in my oppinion. Cheers Dave

    ARGGGHHHHH.......these damned wasps!

Hi I hate these wasps too, there are alot of them around, there must be so many nest around, and they must be big this year! What benifit does the Wasp (by wasp I mean the wasp that is ticking us all off, I know there are lots of different ones!) have in this world! I would exterminate them...

    Year end totals

Hi I am glad you didn't take my post the wrong way, and apriciate your answer. I always leave a super on my colonies over winter, the big debate is if you have the queen excluder on or off, both have merits and disadvantages. Like you said, it works for some, not others and vice versa...

    Year end totals

Hi Pete I am not getting at you, so no need to deffend yourself, just a simple question? Why are you feeding on hives during honey season, you will not have honey, you will have sugar honey? Lastly how many hives do you opperate? Cheers Dave

    Total stupid question

Hi My advice even if your hives are going to be static, ie not migratory, use a strap on each hive, for the time taken to do a strap up, waht 5 seconds it is worth doing. Use good quality hive straps and be careful as you can get them too tight, but then if they are strapped to the stand, and...

    Attendants in or out

Hi We allways leave the atendants in, and we are in the UK, we have no problems, I don't think any part of beekeeping has set rules, anywhere in the world. Try it one way if you like it stick with it. People giving advice is fine, but please do not think your way is the correct way, you...

Retrieving a swarm from their new home

Tie with natural string into empty frames, and if possibel try to put some drawn frames in for them, feed them well, to get them onto making lots of new wax. I would move the colony over 3 miles away first then, back to your site afterwards. Do you ahve a relative or a bit of land belonging to...

    Reaction to sting

Hi I remember going through hives for the second or third time, with a local beekeeper, when he picked the super up, the brood box was stuck to it, not sure why he didn't notice the extra weight, but before I could get a word out, the brood fell off! Bang and we were both black with bees, in...

    Beekeepers back!!!!

Hi If we are talking pickups, I have one too, mine does 14mpg and is a heavy old girl, on 16" wheels, the tyres however are big! Extremely geared down, so very torquey, but top speed of about 25-30mph. Cheers Dave

    Beekeepers back!!!!

Hi With a little work a sack truck can be converted to have big wheels, even bicycle wheels can be used. Then you can get them to roll over much rougher ground. Cheers Dave

    Reaction to sting

Hi Be careful after high numbers of stings as you may have little or no reaction then one day a ramdom sting will push you over the edge and you will be sensitized. You may be as well to request a RAST test after such episodes to see where you are with allergy to stings. Cheers Dave

    Reaction to sting

The part of the body isn't allways the factor in pain or reactions, trust me! I am now undergoing 3 years treatment due to an accident with bees. I was stung on the legs, and that was by far the most painful thing I have had, regards stings, even though before that on the legs it was fine, I...

    Beekeepers back!!!!

Hi I think it depends how big you are. Hedgerow pete, you only have 4 supers at a time, that is impractical at times, maybe you can do this with a few hives, but if you have alot of hives you have no option sometimes. Also if you have a real flow on, you would be surprised how fast a big...
