The death of an old friend

A great shame - my sincere condolences - you can never, ever replace such a wonderful creature - but somewhere there's a dog sitting lonely and frightened in a rescue centre who'd be very happy to help get you over the pain of parting.......... I lost two dogs within a few weeks of each other...

    Has the bubble burst?

The old "join and change from within" argument - I can understand those who think that way, but it's "not my way" - I think I can give a good and relevant analogy - the BWEA (British Wind Energy Association) - a few years ago, they saw fit to swell their membership (and their coffers) by...

    Top Bar Hive

It's certainly possible - nothing is set in stone, so probably worth having a bash and see how you get on - you'd end up with a "hybrid" hive which may well work for you...... ps, if you use a "centre" entrance, start from the middle, if you use an end entrance, start from the end opposite to...

    Top Bar Hive

frames? - the main idea of a top bar hive is to just give the bees a top bar to build from (the name is a bit of a giveaway). Most TBH users don't use a QE...........

    Has the bubble burst?

I've had a quiet chuckle at people grizzling about "expense" - I got to 3 colonies and hives, and all the equipment I needed for a total outlay of under £150 - I made my own (top bar) hives from the free plans available on the net, and populated them from local swarms. My woodworking skills are...

    Has the bubble burst?

I think it apposite to mention that a great many people are (and have been for some time) deeply discontent with the BBKA's "attitude", and their blatantly ignoring many members' wishes, and I think that the availability of insurance from "other sources" may well be the clincher for many voting...

BBC R4 Book of the week. "A Sting in the Tale." About bumble bees but still relevant me thinks?

Beat me to it! Just heard the first part - it was excellent! If anyone missed it, doubtless available on iplayer......

    New initiative from the Coop

The Coop do quite a lot of good - look at their campaign against exploitation of the Alberta tar oil sands for instance (http://www.co-operative.coop/join-the-revolution/our-plan/clean-energy-revolution/tar-sands/resources/), and several other campaigns...

    Advice on getting a dog

Nahhh, petrol was 4s11p gallon, and I could buy five and a half pints of mild and a scotch egg, and have change out of ten bob...........

    Advice on getting a dog

A staffie! - the "nanny dog" wonderful with kids, and probably the nicest temperament of any breed - the rescue centres are awash with them as thickets buy them to look "hard" and rapidly give them up when they find they're soppy creatures who might lick you to death...

    red lily beetle

"When these 'experts' come up with a bee safe pesticide that works as well as provado then I'll switch to it" - if that's your stance, then you must accept the damage the stuff does, and would suggest that it would be responsible to do a lot of reading on the subject in the hope that you would...

    red lily beetle

Provado (much plugged on Radio Sussex by the Sun's gardening "expert" Steve Bradley - how has he got away with it?) is a neonicotinoid, which you should probably know by now is not "flavour of the month" amongst most beekeepers. I would deem it's use on ornamentals at the very least as reckless...

    A Royal Appointment,organic farming.

If the inducements were available through the "system", then many more farmers could do the same - sadly, in my experience, the odds are stacked firmly against people wanting to "go organic".......
