    Concrete beehive

The old lady in "Honeyland" kept a hive in a hole in an old stone wall. So I dont see why concrete would not work. BTW, if you have not seen Honeyland, its a must watch docco. https://www.aa.com.tr/en/culture/documentary-carries-macedonian-beekeeper-out-of-poverty/1711669

Price of honey jars - up , up , up

I thought sterilization for honey jars was less rigorous than for other food related uses. I am sure I have read it can be done just using a microwave or oven.

Price of honey jars - up , up , up

I just checked my old jar supplier - same story i am afraid. Price up by over 50% since my last order! I think its worth trying to collect and reuse jars from customers where possible. Then you only need new lids.

    Ross Rounds?

This is just a crazy idea, and I have never made Ross rounds or handled the equipment, so have no idea if its viable. But would it be possible to replace the outer plastic ring with wax. could you maybe put in a small flimsy sleeve, then the wax. The idea being that the small flimsy sleeve will...

Be glad when Christmas is over.

I remember when radio stations would not play Christmas songs until December. But its slowly been extended to about 5\6 weeks before Christmas. That is 10%+ of the year! Don't get me wrong, I am not mr baa humbug. I like Christmas a lot, but I just seem to get xmas fatigue these days. The...

    fungus that kills Varroa mites

I have never left such a comment on another tread - honest... Nothing wrong with a bit of humor. Seems to be more skepticism than I expected. I suspect it just sounds too good to be true. I dont think its guaranteed to work, but I do think there is a good possibility of this approach...

    fungus that kills Varroa mites

Hi everyone. I hope you all got lots of honey and had a good season. https://bigthink.com/life/fungus-varroa/ I only heard bout this recently, sorry if its old news and I am last to the party. My suspension is that it wont completely wipe out a population of mites on its own. But combined...

    Vegan honey (honea)!!!!!!!!

Never mind the pesticides, what about all the wild animals that were displaced to make way for that field ;) I am not vegan , but to my understanding being vegan is about avoiding animal products wherever possible. Vegans tend to ignore fossil fuels for a start, and I am sure there are many...

How to reduce Water Level in Honey

I used a dehumidifier in my extraction room, I found it helped keep the room warm as well as dry. I figure if you need to heat your extraction room you may had well heat it with a dehumidifier as they are all most as efficient as heating as heaters anyway. If you want to dry your frames after...

Looking for input on a product I've seen recently, I'm also a 100% novice with 0 experience.

Sorry, I like to ramble too! If you are starting out i would recommend just going for national hives. they are most commonly used. as others have said it i possible to make cheap hives. But only if you already have the tools. I made hives when I stated out using ply and timber from Wickes. I...

    honey price update

Your advert gets pulled and you get the chance to appeal, which is a complete waste of time. So its best just to make a new advert, but the FB algorithm will detect if you have used the same picture. So you must always use a slightly different picture. The people that complain I suspect are...

How many hives hits the "sweet-spot"?

I would go for as many as you can get away with in one location, or that you can comfortably manage in a single visit. That way you will be making good efficient use of the time you spend keeping. If you can keep a few hives in your garden that's ideal in my opinion. But if you have to drive...

    honey price update

Never mind that, its the underhand nature of selling on FB that did my head in. Every day someone would report my advert for containing animal related products. Then I would have to make a new advert with new picture. I (my wife) had far more success selling on private FB groups rather than on...

    honey price update

This is where I got my jars as pictured in my profile: https://www.jazjar.co.uk/collections/round-jars/products/310ml-10-12oz-round-jars They will hold 400g of honey. They do other sizes. I print my own labels on standard A4 paper, cut them up and stick them on with wide tape. I cut them...
