Checked colonies today. Have taken the decision to put the weakest colony I have into a 5 frame nuc box.
I gave them a frame of capped brood and some nurse bees from my strongest colony as well. Have a 6 frame nuc on order so will be able to give them an extra frame of stores that ive just...
I picked up a bunch of second hand kit from a guy this year and amongst it is one of these nursery frames.
Can I ask what is the best use for these? Is it for banking virgins or better for mated queen's?
And how would you go about using them effectively?
I've found apps to be a bit fiddly while inspecting. So I'm now creating a spreadsheet in Google sheets. It's based on the bbka record sheets and will have drop down menus in all cells so I can simply tap with a stylus to enter data.
Google sheets auto saves and uploads to my Google drive and I...
Well I've just got back from checking through. Have removed all but one feeder. Four colonies with enough stores to last until next inspection . The only weak one is a colony I rescued from a treefall a few weeks ago who have had to effectively start from scratch.
All down on reduced entrances...

I guess if they have enough for a bit I'll leave them to it. And check in a week or so.
Is anyone winter feeding yet?
I put some feeders on this week after the warning from the bee unit.
I'm thinking I may have jumped the gun a bit now though.
My hives had totally demolished the apipasta packs I put on last week though so my plan for tomorrow is to go through tomorrow and...
Is there any real reason for having a full width entrance? I always have an entrance block in all year round.
Looking at this great idea I can see my self modifying my floors to all have a tunnel permanently. After all wild bees have the same entrance size all year unless they put up a propolis...
