    Oxalic acid vap

There may well be few mites among your bees just now but many of us find that what was a completely clear board is anything but after what's known as an accelerated drop - a single treatment that gives a truer picture. The NBU writes about DMD as if it was an infallible guide but it isn't for...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Good to hear that I'm not the only one who has had to get a replacement reconditioned controller (twice). Ian at Old Castle Farm Hives was sure the problem was me but after a long call while we went over things, he agreed the problem was the wiring in the controller and not the beekeeper's head.

Sulphur Discs from Thornes ? needed?

Off on a tangent: Something similar occurs with 'cedar'. On a tour of gardens in the Cotswolds, the guide, who was primarily a tree specialist, told us that there are four distinct kinds of cedar trees. ‘There’s Atlas cedar, Cyprian cedar, Himalayan cedar, and cedar of Lebanon.’ Later I asked...

    New Beekeeper in 2024!

Not doubting you at all, but I couldn't find this study. Would you mind giving a pointer please? Any decent research in this area sounds like a good thing.

Did I do the right thing?

I found brood in a super under the brood box that I was moving up today. Because I use drone brood in supers, the brood was all drone. Depending on your point of view, that could be a reason to use drone brood in supers. Even if not for you, I don't think it does any harm, and I've found (I...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I didn't but don't think I haven't thought of that since! I keep a jar or two in the car for times like this but, as happens so often, the thought comes too late. :( When will I ever learn...

Just for some fun.... an excuse to smile.

I have all but given up wearing shoes nowadays, and can always be seen in either sandals or wellies instead. Even with a 50% chance of getting it right, I turned up at one apiary today wearing the wrong option :( It's not my birthday but I've well and truly arrived.

    Wet supers

Ah, that would be nice to have that space. Its not my preference to store them outside.

    Wet supers

Gosh, I'm wondering what (fun) I'm missing here. Something to do with unextracted ('crystallised') honey remaining in the frames, as opposed to the residue of extracted honey ('standard wet supers')? I think the message being given out is that we can safely put our wet supers back on in spring...

    NDB versus Master Beekeeper?

Agreed, but I don't think any of this applies to the NDB or those who hold it.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not quite in the apiary but I dropped off honey to a local shop and didn't pay for parking. I was only a couple of minutes but a warden was checking my car when I returned. I see you're a beekeeper, he said. (I had my B car.) We had an interesting chat. He's from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines...

    NDB versus Master Beekeeper?

I might have missed these but the latest issue of BeeCraft appears to have just one article from a Master Beekeeper and none from any NDB holders. As I said above, I would welcome more articles from NDB holders - not that I think BeeCraft is short of good articles. I thought the award they...

    NDB versus Master Beekeeper?

I was unaware that the NDB had its origins in the BBKA. I'm not sure that's true. The NDB beekeepers I know are incredibly knowledgeable and are excellent communicators. Master beekeepers, being less thin on the ground, are a more mixed bunch.

Time to get the camera out againAnd spread some joy

Well done you for posting this photo of yourself. The dressing up box is a big part of the grandchildren's visits to us.

    Can I unite 3 hives?

I think I remember him saying that 80% of the time, the younger queen survived, 15% the older queen, and 5% both lived on. I don't remember anything about a barrier.
