Thanks for the reply - yes, I should have mentioned that the swarm came from one of my hives and I was actually around to see it coming out! Great experience but not exactly great timing! So, QE put on to keep the queen in (I assumed she was the old donor hive queen and didn't need to mate.)

Can you advise me how I should go about getting a nuc box for developing nucleus when I have Langstroth hives and the only nuc boxes I see available are based on nationals? The frames would not be compatible when they were transferred to a hive, surely?

I noticed exactly the same scenario - a few flying on Saturday and then on Sunday a hundred or so dead outside the entrance of each hive. Underneath the OMF was a lot of dust which I took to being the bees rapidly uncapping honey supplies.
