Once you have established the Q status. If you are Q- you can introduce the Q from the nuc to the old hive and let the nuc raise a new queen or,. You can combine the lot but you will need a new brood box.
I'm not a fan of the Demaree method for the reasons you suggest. Brood frames are more useful for brood. I would spin the frames out and get them back in circulation. If you are like me and need the space and don't't have a million nuc boxes, getting your head around using the Snelgrove board...
I have done an AS with Snelgrove board. I need bees back in at 5 and 10 days. I have let a queen develop in top box. Can I remove her and begin to bleed bees back into the bottom box after a couple of days.
No queen cells. I think they didn't like the fact that the box was full of foundation. I did a raid on a few hives for drawn foundation and dropped in a frame of capped brood. I found the queen under the hive and popped her back in.
